Okay, so I just watched the Dear Rvan Hansen *movie* and I'm... not sure how to feel. I don't know if anyone agrees with me but I just feel like they shoe-horned in a lot of unnecessary things while getting rid of some of the musicals best moments. Like, they got rid of one of the musicals first songs, Anybody Have a Map, which showcases how much the mothers are struggling to help their sons, and instead added in The Anonymous Ones, which I will get into later. They cut out things like ghost Connor and how he confronted Evan about his "fall." They cut out Good For You and then only gave us a glimpse of how upset Evan's friends and family were with his actions. They got rid of To Break In a Glove, an important song about what Larry was doing to try and help Connor, and only gave us a step-father who wasn't trying to be a big and helpful part of his kids life. They neglected to show us any scene of the Murphy's dynamic before Connor died- they only told us that, once upon a time, Connor and Zoe used to like eachother, now they don't.
Onto the other part- the stuff they *did* add in. Before I talk about this I just want to say that I *love* (musical) Alana. She is amazing for starting the Connor Project and she is a strong and respectable woman. With that said, I must now say- they did *not* do Alana well in this movie. They did her dirty. They *tried* to give Alana more screentime, but it ended up feeling unnecessary and *quite* forced. The Anonymous Ones would be a *great* song on it's own, but it just doesn't add much to the musical, and is obviously just in there to keep Alana relevant. Then they forget about her again until she has interrogate Evan. The way they show her in the movie almost makes me *annoyed*. They tried to give her her own struggles, and then they moved on, and it feels like she never even said anything in the first place. Next and probably the last thing I can think of/fit in is Requiem. I'm not sure what they were trying to do with Zoe there.
