Halloween in Sweden:

In Sweden, we have celebrated All Hallows Eve (or All Saint's Eve, as it's called here) since around year 700. It is a day when we remember the people we have loved and lost and we do this by putting wreaths and lighting candles on their graves. If you visit a cemetery anywhere in Sweden during this day, you will be faced with a vast starscape of tiny, flickering lights, quietly stretching across the darkness. In comparison, the more commercial Halloween with its' parties and trick-or-treats was only introduced in Sweden in the early 1990's and has been kind of a tough sell since it clashes with how we usually commemorate the day.

@MetalHeadBoss We don't call them anything;) We say "Excuse me, could you help point me in the right direction?" And that's it. And like I said, I don't mind questions;)

MetalHeadBoss

Right, thanks! I've a feeling that might be of a use some day. :)

@MetalHeadBoss Hi! Yes, actually, it is true;) Titles have been more or less obsolete for the past 100 years. If we want to seem formal, we might add the last name as well, but that's about it. Even the Prime Minister, the man in charge of all of Sweden, is generally referred to by his first name (or first and last during formal occasions). Really, the only one with a true titel is the king, but he is usually only referred to as King Carl, and that's still pretty informal. And I don't mind questions;) Like a true Swede, I love telling people about my country! So feel free to ask me anything, I'm only too happy to answer;) I hope you make it to Sweden one day! It's probably more exotic than you can imagine;)

Okay, just one thing I kind of don't get then - what do you call a person whose name you don't know? Like, say you're lost and need to ask someone for directions (in English you don't need to address the person, I know, but say you were asking in Swedish.)

I was just wondering - that thing you wrote in your profile that in Sweden you don't use titles and just use the first name. Is that actually true?

Just wondering because I love the country, folklore and music so I really want to visit someday. :D
