Nanjing Massacre: Also known as the Rape of Nanking, this took place in 1937 when Japanese forces captured the city of Nanjing (then spelled Nanking) in China. During the occupation, Japanese soldiers engaged in widespread rape, looting, arson, and the killing of an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers.
Comfort Women: The Japanese military established a system of sexual slavery during World War II, where women from countries such as Korea, China, the Philippines, and other occupied territories were forcibly recruited or coerced into providing sexual services for Japanese soldiers. Estimates suggest that tens of thousands of women were subjected to this brutal practice.
Biological Warfare Unit 731: Japan operated a covert biological and chemical warfare research unit known as Unit 731 during World War II. This unit conducted inhumane experiments on prisoners of war and civilians, including infecting them with diseases, testing chemical weapons, and conducting vivisections without anesthesia, resulting in the deaths of thousands.
Forced labor and mistreatment: Japan implemented a policy of forced labor during its occupation of various countries, including Korea, China, and Southeast Asian nations. Millions of people were subjected to harsh working conditions, maltreatment, and many lost their lives due to exhaustion, malnutrition, and disease.
Bataan Death March: Following the surrender of American and Filipino forces in the Philippines in 1942, Japanese troops subjected the prisoners of war to a brutal forced march from the Bataan Peninsula to prison camps. The march covered around 65 miles, during which thousands of prisoners endured extreme physical abuse, torture, and many died from exhaustion, starvation, or were killed.
