I know I have not been active lately, but I’ve seen some shit in fanfics that I’d like to talk about.
(It’s gonna be a long one)
This whole thing should have a Trigger Warning. I talk about topics that may be triggering to some audience.
The romanticizing of toxic love interests. I’ve noticed that the love interest often are controlling/“dominant” but in a very abusive way. This could be anything like emotional abuse to actually hitting their partner. The worst part is that the MC in those explain in text that they did not like it, yet the fic continues as if the love interest is not a terrible person.
Examples could be (TW) that the MC gets LITERALLY RAPED and the love interest then pushes sex upon them. If the MC doesn’t feel like having sex, the love interest will be mad and make the MC feel bad. I’m sorry, but WTF? These topics are concerning to write about, especially when the aftermath is treated in these ways.
I am definitely guilty of getting to the sexual parts fast due to requests and ‘algorithm’ but it also feels like these soft fictions suddenly turns into a BDSM session in chapter 2.. like I get were all hormonal beings, but for the love of god, don’t make the MC panic over every little thing and only stare at the love interests body as if the only thing in this world is sex.
Lastly, writing in triggering subjects such as (TW) self harm, eating disorders, abuse in general. Does not make your character ’quirky’. Your character does not have to have a past of abuse to be interesting. They don’t have to encounter a man who will sexually assault them in a bathroom on chapter 5,7 & 10.
Thank you for listening to my bitch rant about why Wattpad needs to get their shit together.
Have a good day
