At the moment, I'm writing modern and historical fantasy.

I'm really interested in stories that have a strong female protagonist. Not so much role models - but authentic and unruly women, who sometimes make bad choices and sometimes make good choices, who have awkward inner lives, who sometimes mess up, who sometimes strive to make themselves better people. Humans, in other words.

I run a project called RAW - Rise Authentic Woman! in which I gather and promote stories, art, films and so on which explore alternative, wilder and more authentic aspects of the female psyche. You can read my manifesto here http://www.katewickens.me/rise-authentic-woman/

If you think this reflects your story or female characters or interests, then please do contact me and, if I agree, I'll only be too happy to share and retweet your work.

It distresses me that publishers think there's no appetite for anti-heroines and female characters that don't fit into a safe mould. I think quite opposite - I think that there's a huge hunger for alternative, unconventional female characters that are the driving force of their story - whatever the genre.

And I want to shout about it as loudly as I can until they listen.

The more voices, the louder we'll be.
