Thanks for adding LIVEWIRE VOODOO to your reading list.

It's got a lot of male characters, so reading your bio shocked me. Still, the book's wise "Obi Wan Kenobi" character Maddy is female medium who stands firm on moral principle, come hell or high-water. And the most reliable point-of-view character is Maddy's granddaughter, the 30-something Peg.

FYI -- LIVEWIRE started twenty years ago as a short story for an Ohio State creative writing class. Peg was POV, Maddy the "general" directing Peg, with Frank, the ghost, the only male providing comic relief. I got like a 99/100 on it (I had some typos). The short story's still there, but the backstory's fleshed-out. Which shifted the focus.

@KateWickens Strange how those things work.

Ha ha! I can understand your surprise, but in spite of shouting loudly about my feminist agenda, I'm not averse to male characters at all (indeed, some of the most sympathetic characters in my book are men). First and foremost, I'm drawn to an interesting story and many of the ingredients of your story - voodoo, the front cover, paranormal, jazz tag and your influences - appealed to me. What you said about your female characters above though has certainly sold it to me further. I also have a weakness for Tom Waits, and there's something about the atmosphere of your story which has a whiff of him (or am I way off the mark here?).

My book also began as a short story 20 odd years ago - funny how they dig in and never let go until we do proper justice to them...

Thanks for contacting me, and looking forward to reading your book.

            Best!
