A random Disney theory that I am fond of(that you've probably heard of):
Looking to Greek Mythology, Zeus has two brothers: Hades and Poseidon. Poseidon had a child with Amphitrite named TRITON, who becomes KING TRITON during The Little Mermaid.
The king and queen later have Ariel, therefore Poseidon is her grandfather.
Zeus and Hera have Hercules, therefore Poseidon is his uncle.
Since they both have roots via Poseidon(his brother and his son), that makes Ariel and Hercules COUSINS.
ALSO WORTH NOTING: Triton has three siblings: Rhodos, Benthesikyme, and Kymopoleia. They are all girls, which explains why he ONLY HAS DAUGHTERS.
