I was born in a women's prison in Southern California. Such a dark fact definitely served as an ominous foreshadowing of what my life was soon to become.
After my mother was released from prison, she decided--for some reason still unknown and unclear to this day--to move up the coast to Seattle. Unfortunately, things did not get better in Seattle. When my momma slipped back into her drug-addicted and hustling ways, I wound up being raised by the foster care and juvenile institutional system. Needless to say, jails and prison became a way of life for me as an adult.
Fortunately--or at least I believe so--I began to write long hand-written stories while in prison. At some point, I realized that the stories I was writing were unique. Unlike most urban books, my stories did not glamorize "the life" but showed the realities of the darkness and pain that goes hand-in-hand with being a part of it.
