I've loved writing since Junior school. As part of a class writing project, I was working on a story about a bumbling detective called Inspector Fuzzdick. I'd borrowed heavily from Clouseau, of the Pink Panther films, but hey - I was only nine.
Anyway, I was asked to read the first chapter to the rest of the school during Friday Assembly, which was a kind of 'show and tell' exercise. I was terrified. Not about standing in front of the whole school, as I was a bit of a show off, but more about the reaction from my peers towards my work.
Thankfully, it proved popular and I was asked back each week to read the next chapter. I was catapulted to a degree of stardom within the school that I'd never experienced before and I had well and truly caught the writing bug.
A few years later, whilst studying English Literature, I became engrossed in the adventures of Richard Hannay. Most people are only familiar with this character from The Thirty-Nine Steps but he is actually the protagonist of five stories. It was the forth such story, The Three Hostages, where the author, John Buchan, gives an insight into the art of writing fiction and I began to hone my skills.
I write crime thrillers but, as a lover of science (and a self-confessed Whovian and Trekkie) I dabble in the Scifi genre as well. Many years have passed since receiving my inspiration to write (and several more to boot since I read my first work out loud in school assembly) and I am still honing my skills. Sometimes I wish that Buchan had explained how, when writing, to stay focused and actually finish the damn thing but, I'm sure, these are pitfalls that all writers experience.
I hope you enjoy my work and I will always appreciate your feedback.
