@PeterAC Sorry for not responding sooner! I'm trying to finish my own novel (and posted a few chapters of another one in time to quality for the Wattys) so don't have time to give much help. But hopefully once I finish my last few chapters and my daughter goes back to school I'll have more time. Theoretically. LOL
When I hit writer's block, I put on some music that evokes the mood the scene needs. Then I close my eyes and just start imagining the characters. When I do that, my characters tend to start doing/saying things I hadn't even thought of. LOL (There have been times when I'm writing a scene with plans to impart 3 specific pieces of info--but the characters take the dialog in a totally different direction. Sometimes it's hard to reign them in!
If your block is due to the plotline and not just a particular scene, you might need to back up to a prior point in your story and imagine going in a different direction with it. This could help see where the story got off track. Maybe you come up with a better plot thread, or you keep the current one because now you see where you should take it next. You can also look at the story from minor characters' view. How do *they* see what's going on? What's *their* motivation/agenda?
Another tactic is just to step back and work on something completely different for a few days/week. I did that (wrote a couple short stories for contests) and came back to my novel feeling refreshed and energized again.
Above all, hang in there! We all go through writer's block and feel burnouts. It's normal and it will pass. :D
Hope this helps!
