I was wondering if you could tell me what happens if a child's parent dies and their other parent is mentally unstable and currently hospitalized in an institution. Would the child be living with their closest adult sibling? A relative?
My Father was diagnosed with kidney failure and his type-2 diabetes is getting much worse. My mother, however, is diagnosed with a form of paranoid schizophrenia. So, assuming my father does not last 6 months (and hoping that he does not last very longer), would my mother come home? My father is the only provider of the family, so I would lose my house. And due to the safe environment regulations DCFS has, I doubt my mother would be safe enough for her to live with me (she has a history of battery), nor will I be living on the streets as a minor. (Currently 16 years old) My father has decided that his wife should inherit hundred percent of his life insurance, so I cannot even invest in my own housing. So far, I have no clue what would happen. Some say that my mother would make decisions for me if my father dies, but that would not be logical since she is mentally ill. Others say that I would land in foster care, even if I have adult relatives who are financially stable. Right now I desire to live with my sister who is very capable of housing me. I have asked lawyers, but they do not have specific knowledge of what would happen in this exact case. Please, even a vague idea of what might turn out will be greatly appreciated.
