✨Diverity Question Number Who Knows✨

So! This one goes out to everyone

What are your guys’ opinions on blending real and fantasy cultures? For instance: making an Indian-esque culture in a fantasy story that celebrates Holi (or something very similar), but also adding in another festival that doesn’t exist in Indian culture? Or having a people/culture you based off the Chinese, but the only similarities (aside from maybe appearance) is the food?
Basically what I’m asking is, what elements of a real world culture do you think authors should be allowed to use and blend into their own fantasy cultures, if any? And if they do, how similar to the real world should those cultures be?

And second question: how do you guys feel about blending real-world cultures to create a fantasy one? Think Sanfransokio (did I spell that right?) from Big Hero 6, vs if you were to take, idk, one Polynesian culture and mix it with Japanese? Do you think the cultures you pull from need to be fairly different, similar, or does that not matter as long as you accurately depict both sides?

I didn’t explain this one quite so well, so if anything’s confusing let me know

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

And I think what I said also stands for the second question too. In my opinion, as long as you get it right and make sure each side is represented accurately, I think it’s great! (I mean, culture mixing (interwoven cultures? Idk the word for it) is also a historical thing too. In history many different cultures were mixed together for different reasons so I mean, if people from the past (and present ig) can do it I’m sure it’s okay for you to do it as well!)

I think it’s cool and I love seeing (insert culture here) inspired stories! I find it creative and super interesting to see the author’s imagination, plus, it keeps the culture alive and shows the people of that culture that you find it cool enough to base a fictional system on it. I’ve heard of a lot of authors doing this (even popular ones, like Marie Lu or Leigh Bardugo) and I think for the most part it’s turned out really well. However, the problem does arise when, like someone said above, people start to think everything they read in the book is true and reflects other real world cultures, and then try to tell everyone they know something about it just because they read a book about it, or assumes they then know everything about the culture. So depending on what you do, it’s sort of a so-so thing. About one of the examples you used though, for the having ppl being based off the Chinese but the only similarities is the food, I would maybe say there should probably be a bit of a more deeper aspect that’s connected, to be involved as well, other than the food, but as long as you respect the cultural values and don’t change them in a way that disrespects the culture’s values you’re probably fine. (For once I feel qualified enough to speak about this just bc I did an essay about it XD)

A book I really like, Cast in Firelight, did this and since the culture the author based it off of was very similar to the one I identify with, I really felt connected with it and I feel like that’s probably why I loved it so much. So if you do it right, hopefully you’ll achieve that same effect with your readers!! And even if you don’t get it right the first time, there’s always sensitivity/beta readers to help you get it right :))

@SilverBeams I think it'd be cool, but it might insult others so maybe you could just include stuff like food music and dance
