When Nicola Smith got pregenant at only 17-years-old she was kicked out of home, only her baby daddy, Adam Roberts, and his family were there for her. Whilst the Robert's weren't please with the situation they weren't about to let their child become an irrisponsible parent whilst the woman he loved and his child became homeless.
Then, on the 5th June 2005, Nicola went into labour, giving birth to their daughter. Nicola named them Kenny Jean Roberts, after Adam's parents, Ken and Jean Roberts. By this time they were 18 and going on to higher education, after a year of studying law in a local university Adam dropped out, he had missed so many of Kenny's firsts, such as her first steps. Instead he opened up a Cafe called Cafe Stultus, playing piano and serving Coffee to the costumers.
Then three years later Nicola finished their own degree in science and became a science teacher at the local secondary school. Nicola wasn't there as much as Adam was, Kenny and Nicola didn't have a close relationship like Adam and Kenny. Nicola thought nothing of it as Kenny was only 4, how much could it effect. And so the same year Nicola revealed their biggest secret, one they'd be hiding since they were 12, that they were trans. They had prepared for the worst, which never came. And that's when Nick walked in, Nicola never really existed, they were always Nick. To prove how devoted Adam was he proposed to his boyfriend, Nick.
Then, three years before the present Adam died to Pancreatic Cancer, it felt like the end of the world to Nick. And Kenny's and Nick's relationship only became more and more distant.
But this story isn't about Nick, it's about Kenny. Whilst they didn't lose all that Nick did, she lost her father and all connection to her dad, then is forced to move from their seaside English village to a snowy Colorado town. Then helping their dad cope with everything, she is then hit by a crushing feeling when they get closer to Riley Jones.
