Who are you really? And what were you before? What did you do, and what did you think? (Casablanca 1942)

I have a "me" waiting behind screen, who's humorous, mental, vulgar and vain. When given a choice to be someone else, freshly baked dough of a new name and identity, I took it. I tried to be different up here, sort of charming, louche, elegant with eloquence. I wanted to be perfect and inevitably ended up sounding like an eccentric loony.

To make it up to you, I'm happy to report that I've never stopped being a clumsy, lumpish grouch with a deteriorating eyesight. I'm an easy and passionate lover for anything remotely aesthetic and today the breeze said classic literature, Golden Hollywood movies, a cup of tea and a quiet library.

Yours dearly,
Valerie Metis-Humphrey
