Sneak peek
(When the day came, the four of them gathered at the Cloud Recesses gate. The difference between the two older Lans was drastic.
Lan Xichen's eyes gleamed with suppressed delight. "Take care, Wangji. Enjoy the trip."
Lan Qiren looked like a man attending a funeral. "Behave," he said, his voice stern. "Don't be impulsive. Remember the teachings of the Lan principles." His tone was heavy, as though something were weighing down on his old soul.
Wei Ying pouted, indignant. "I won't misbehave! And even if I can't help it, Lan Zhan will keep an eye on me. Don't worry, Shufu."
Lan Qiren was worried — terribly so.
Just — not about Wei Ying.
No, all his fears were reserved for his wolf of a nephew. In his mind, his poor prized cabbage of a son-in-law was about to be eaten by that big bad wolf.
How had things come to this?
Xichen had turned into a cunning fox. Wangji was evidently a wolf. And Wei Ying, inexplicably, was the last pure-hearted soul in this entire family — his one remaining untainted cabbage.
A complicated swirl of emotions rose in his chest. He couldn't say anything directly, so he looked at Wei Ying instead, pouring every unspoken warning into a single gaze.
Child. Beware.
Wei Ying blinked back at him, thoroughly confused.
"Why is this old man looking at me like that?"He tilted his head slightly.
"...Must be worried I'll corrupt his perfect nephew."He huffed internally.
Lan Qiren exhaled.
Clearly, all of Wei Wuxian's brilliant cells had been spent on academics. "Be safe on the road," he muttered.
Lan Xichen, reading his uncle's face perfectly, looked deeply entertained.)
