WHAT'S WITH MY PEN NAME?
Nowadays the term " Yawa" has always been linked to demons and has been commonly used as a cursive word. But do you know that it was the spaniards who tainted it?
According to Professor Felipe Jocano Jr. , an anthropologist from the University of the Philippines Diliman, Spaniards demonized everything which are not part of their Catholic framework including the Visayan goddess- Nagmalitong Yawa Sinagmaling Diwata in their attempt to gain control of the islands. She was being portrayed as work of a demon.
However, in contrast to what colonizers labeled her, Nagmalitong yawa was being portrayed as a powerful goddess, a warrior and loving woman based on the precolonial literary work called "Hinilawod", an epic poem from Panay Island.
Although there are many versions of the story about Nagmalitong yawa, none of it depicted her as work of devil not until the arrival of Spaniards and how they distorted things just to achieve the THREE G-God, gold, & glory.
My pen name was inspired by her as I find it interesting and I wanna craft stories where my characters are as powerful and warrior-like as she was. I am not against the Catholic religion, as I am Catholic myself. However, I believe it is important to acknowledge and understand history.
No hate, Just love!💛
