In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted in one of the most destructive volcanic events in European history, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Pompeii was a thriving city with around 11,000 to 15,000 residents, known for its advanced infrastructure, public baths, temples, and vibrant culture. Though small earthquakes had occurred in the years before, including a major one in 62 AD, they were largely ignored by locals.
The eruption began suddenly, sending a dark column of ash and gases into the sky. Soon after, debris began falling on the city, collapsing roofs and suffocating those who stayed. Then came a massive pyroclastic surge...
hold on, did someone just say... massive?
yk what else is massive?
