I'm a retired hotelier. 
However, about ten years ago I got very sick and ended up in hospital for about a year. After quite a lot of treatment I had a bone marrow transplant.
This saved my life.  It also gave me the will to write - which is very odd as I never considered myself as a writer.  So that's what I'm doing.  Bit by bit my head ends up with stories and they want to get out and display themselves.
