During tech I always wonder, “Why do I do theater?”
We sit around. We put our hearts and our souls and every thing we have into rehearsal every day. We deal with bleeding feet, injuries, sore muscles, screaming directors, breaking down actors, losing voices, the tired eyes, the constant sweat. All of that. We do all of this for three shows.
Only three nights. People come to see what we do for three nights. Then I remember.
The people.
Cast turns from cast, to family. Cuddling, whispering, laughing. The Green Room becomes home. It’s our kitchen, our dining room, our bedroom, our living room. We forget about people who aren’t in the production. We forget about the ones we love or care for outside of our cast. We miss them, but they aren’t in our current family. We bond because we unite under Thespis, under a love of performance.
You may say we’re all histrionic attention seekers.
But if you step on a stage, knowing what you have, knowing everyone will see what you have, you fall in love.
