Wow, just finished Once More to the River.  I found it really captivating.  It reminded me of Luis Rodriguez's Always Running.  Wish there were more books out there like this one that really capture these little idiosyncrasies and feel intimate and familiar at the same time.  Thanks for sharing your stories.

This story is a fictional account of Gabriel Bocanegra, who on the verge of turning thirty, plans a trip to Mexico—and then his mother tags along, steering him to an isolated, rural outpost in Northern Mexico to visit their widowed aunt who lives alone with her dog.
           
          An over-protective mother. A foul-mouthed widow and her friends. A dog named Chocolate that killed chickens and another that liked to play dead.
