Hi ! \
〞child ? What is it you are doing here at such an hour of night, it is dangerous . 〟
@ernergy ִֶָ. .. ࣪ ִֶָ་༘࿐ :D how are you \ 〟a stin— at the dead of night ? 〞 Was this child alright ? Had he needed food so much one would go to a store or something. 〟come up here, there is no need to fetch such things when you can eat at a store nearby. 〞 He would gesture, lowering his height as he got to a knee, brows furrowing. 〞My name is Nukoyo. What is yours ? 〟
@-L0st_SaN1ty- “ i was trying to catch a stink fish . ” rowan looked up from the water . he hadn't even noticed how late it had gotten . his curious eyes settled on the stranger . “ who are you ? ” he tipped his head a little . “ i'm used to the dark . ” a tiny shrug . “ it's not so bad once you get used to it . ”
i—what, hey don’t you dare (..) omg, who is that?
@leborne “ the sheriff . ” rowan frowned a little . “ haven't you ever been to a town before ? ” he gave her another curious look . somehow . she felt familiar . he couldn't say why . and he wasn't sure he liked the feeling . rowan wandered away before she could answer . weaving through the little street market with his hands tucked behind his back . his attention settled on a basket of ribbons . he picked up a soft one . turning it over between his fingers . “ ma would like this . ” then another . smaller . “ ... and annette can't be left out . ”
bohoooo !
@leborne “ what are you ? five ? ” rowan glanced over his shoulder . unimpressed . “ act your age , woman . ” he rolled his eyes before turning back to the field . crouching down again . carefully picking another herb from the grass . he was far too focused on his little collection . the berries . the leaves . everything he had spent time searching for . “ and go away . ” he glanced at her again . “ you're going to draw attention again . ” rowan gathered the herbs into his hands . “ then my berries will be gone . ” a pause . “ i can't have you ruining this . ”
⠀⠀⠀ my heart, get down from the tree. please.
@magicker “ if i do . ” rowan held tighter to the bark beneath his hands . looking down at rurik from the tree branch . “ can i get a hug ? ” the question came quieter than he intended . because he'd been thinking about it for weeks . wondering if he should ask . wondering if he was too old to ask . but then rurik had said those words . *my heart.* and for the smallest moment . something flickered . a face he couldn't quite see . a voice he couldn't quite remember . gone before he could hold onto it . rowan blinked . confused by the ache it left behind . “ please ? ” his grip loosened just a little . waiting for him to promise . waiting like the answer mattered more than getting down from the tree .
that was the last letter, rowan. you—we have to [..] let him go.
⠀ID: ⟮ @fyrirs ⟯ ⠀⠀⠀⠀┈┈┈─ *her throat tightens at the sudden silence settling between them. people drift past, conversations carrying on the breeze. laughter rises here and there, and nearly everyone wears a smile. meanwhile, her chest aches, and she feels tears threaten to spill. there is nothing she can do to make this better. not if it means giving up what she loves most, and miri had held onto that hope for nearly seventeen years. still, it wasn’t enough. she draws a shaky breath, her heart splintering at the way rowan tightens his grip around her hand. he is far too young to be carrying choices like these. miri hates it. gathering herself, she gives a small nod before gently slipping her hand free. lifting her picking bag once more, she reaches for the branches, carefully choosing the ripest apples she can manage despite the blur clouding her vision.* invite them for a sleepover. tabby and annette. i’ll cook dinner for the three of you. *her voice trembles. she covers it with a quiet cough, pretending to clear her throat. once her bag is full enough, she hooks it over her shoulder and gently ushers rowan back toward the waiting trailer. the ride back passes in near silence. only the steady rumble of the tires over the dirt road and the occasional rustle of apple baskets fill the truck. the quiet hurts too much for words. it isn’t until they’re back inside the truck that her eyes lift to the rearview mirror. rowan sits quietly in the backseat, and for a brief moment, she simply watches his reflection. her fingers tighten around the steering wheel before she finally speaks again, her voice softer this time.* make it two. maybe.. a lunch date? if, uh.. he has time. i can stay with darci and isla over the weekend. / kinda forgot he’s half elvish lol, his parents not accepting makes this more sad
@orfays some part of him had hoped maybe . maybe things could be different . rowan stood quietly beside his ma . he couldn't quite look at her . it wasn't anything she'd done . it was her voice . it sounded different today . and something inside his chest pinched at the sound of it . he said nothing . only tightened his fingers around hers . their hands still linked together . “ can we pick more apples though ? ” his eyes wandered toward the orchard . “ i wanted to take some home for tabby and annette . ” he tried to sound excited . tried to think about apples . but his thoughts stayed somewhere else . the little paper bag in his other hand crinkled beneath his grip . he took a slow breath . then another . the question slipped out before he could swallow it back . “ can i... talk to him... one last time ? ” rowan kept his eyes on the ground . “ just a phone call . ” a pause . “ please . ” his fingers curled tighter around hers . “ you can stay with me . ”
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀nay. go away.
⠀⠀ ⠀ ╱ he’s sleeping.
@maneye “ between you and me . i don't actually like that she went away for the weekend . ” a pause . “ that's not like her . ” another pause . “ i think she's with pa . ” he didn't know why he thought that . he just did . “ why couldn't he just stay here with us ? ” “ i mean... the ranch is open to everyone . ” rowan waited . and waited . “ ... sev ? ” a beat . “ are you snoring ? ”
@maneye everyone in the house was fast asleep . rowan waited a whole ten seconds before deciding that counted as permission . he nudged annette forward . the two of them clumsily climbed onto sev's bed . rowan ducked beneath the blankets first . reaching back to tug annette in after him . a quiet giggle escaped him . then sev stirred . rowan froze . one tiny hand landed on sev's head in what he thought was a very convincing attempt to lull him back to sleep . “ why ? ” he frowned . “ you let miri sleep beside you . why can't i ? ” rolling his eyes to himself . he settled into the nearest empty spot . except annette immediately crawled over sev instead . “ annette . ” rowan sighed the biggest sigh a ten-year-old could manage . gently pulling her back beside him . “ never have children . ” he whispered with complete seriousness . “ i swear this kid isn't even mine . but i'm getting tired of her following me around the house . ” another sigh . “ tabby's worse . i'm catching strays . ” annette was already playing with the little beaded bracelet wrapped around his wrist . the one he'd made from his popped-off button . rowan watched her tiny fingers with growing concern . “ don't eat it . ” he whispered . “ seriously . don't eat it . ” after a while . the room grew quiet again . “ sev ? ” his voice was barely above a whisper . “ ... when's ma coming home ? ” he picked at the blanket between his fingers .
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ “when i am with you, you behave as nothing short of a brat, and yet when i am away, your mother never stops from chewing my bones.”⠀rurik folded the cuffs of his shirt, lowering himself until he knelt before rowan. the sand shifted under his knee as he watched the boy with a quiet expression, the faintest hint of amusement resting beneath his sternness.
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “did you miss me?”
@magicker the silence from the man felt different this time . rowan watched him walk back to the chair . watched the familiar hat settle over his head again . he reached over and gave annette a gentle pat atop her hair . “ stay here . ” she was safe . the man wasn't far . only a handful of steps away . rowan counted them anyway . one . two . three . until he found himself standing beside the chair . “ you didn't answer me . ” a little frown settled across his face . this close . that strange feeling came back . warm . familiar . it made his chest ache in a way he couldn't explain . he wished his pa were here . just for a little while . his eyes wandered to the man's hands . then to his forearms . ma had once told him his father carried a mark . rowan searched for it without meaning to . his fingers twitched at his side . he almost asked . almost reached out . but the courage never came .
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ [⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ the open beach stood in stark contrast to the pang nestling inside him. it churned as violently as the passing current, pausing only as though the claws of the brutal thing gripping at his chest could never truly be appeased. there was nothing to be done now, nor any answer he could give rowan that would make sense of it all, nor the slightest comfort he could offer. it had never come naturally to him, or so he had always believed. the boy was his mirror, and a single look into those grey hues was enough to bring him to his feet. the lie was no easy feat either. rurik stepped away from their little circle in the sand. the castle sat at a narrow tilt, already beginning to surrender to the tide, and his gaze lingered upon annette for only a moment. he could not understand the quiet ache settling inside him, nor the way he yearned to have a daughter of his own. alas, he turned away, his jaw clenched. his feet dragged against the sand as he returned to his chair. lowering himself into it, he reached for the hat he had abandoned earlier and settled it over his brow to shield his eyes. rurik stared toward the horizon, then to the soundless waves that rolled ashore without pause. when had things become this ugly? he could not recall a moment so damning, perhaps because there had never been only one. still, he forced himself to keep his eyes upon the water. he knew that if he looked back, something buried deep within him would betray itself, and the recognition rowan so desperately sought could never be given this way. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀]
@magicker rowan’s heart gave a funny little jump . the man's voice stopped him cold . it sounded familiar . and yet . it didn't . without thinking , he shuffled closer to annette . sitting himself between her and the stranger . he leaned sideways , trying to peek over the man's shoulder for sev . “ chew bones ? ” rowan lifted a brow . “ is that supposed to scare me ? ” he ignored the rest of the questions . turning back to annette , he patted another handful of damp sand onto the little castle they were building . she hadn't noticed a thing . somehow . that made him even more nervous . “ can you go away ? ” rowan glanced back at him . “ you'll scare her . she doesn't like strangers . ” he meant every word . but another feeling tugged at him all the same . strange . heavy . like he'd known the man before he'd ever seen his face . for one confusing second . all he wanted was to throw his arms around him . rowan frowned at himself . he didn't understand it . “ my father will be here any minute now . ” the lie came easier than he expected . his fingers pressed another shell into annette's castle . “ why did you come here ? ”
