“mm,  nothing suspicious.”  his reply came with a shrug.  “so you’re not much of a rule abiding kinda woman,  are you?  wise character.”

            “ hmm funny indeed , i suppose i’ve decided to take it more as a suggestion than a hard and fast rule ” she said , cold blue eyes observing the other “ now what are you doing lurking around a ‘private - no entry’ door ? ” she asked raising an eyebrow 

*   she nodded along,  processing everything she was saying and it truly did help her put things into her own perspective   *   so it’s true when people say that no matter how ready you think you are,  you’re never truly ready.   *   it was hard to wrap her head around,  but eva had done enough to convince her that she truly would be okay once the time came   *   i appreciate the advice.  it’ll come in handy once me and nick are ready to take that step.

            “ hm i wasn’t scared because…. i knew it was something i wanted to do. it wasn’t technically forced on me. i could’ve refused but i had already decided to give him a better life so the rewarding feeling overpowered everything else ” she said after a moment of thought. “ of course there is a lot of anxiety and worry that comes with it but above all else it should feel right… i’m not sure how else to explain it. when you do it for yourself you’ll realise…. once you’ve fully committed you’ll wonder how you could’ve ever thought you’d regret it ” she said with a slight smile. “ i wasn’t ready at all , i worked a minimum wage job , mid - degree , there honestly couldn’t have been a worse situation and i still don’t regret it. i know it’s a lot but i think you’ll be ok ”

wow  ..  i didn’t know that.  you were so young.  were you scared?   *   she asked,  her attention fully focused on eva   *   i understand your situation was different,  but did you know you were ready to take that step?  do you / ever / know?   *   it was something she had often wondered herself.  part of her felt ready for the next step,  yet she didn’t at the same time   *   i just don’t want to have any regrets or mess up when i eventually go through with it.

            “ uh … a meeting ran over ” evangeline said her voice quiet , her gaze distracted as she kicked off her shoes. she hung up her coat , put away her keys and scarf … all things she usually did and yet right now she was just going through the motions. her body was physically there but her mind was somewhere far far away. she beelined straight for the armchair taking a seat cross-legged as she fumbled with her lighter. her usually steady hands , almost shaky … the only indicator that outed her calm facade. she lit a cigarette , her body relaxing momentarily as she the smoke filled her lungs and she leaned back. “ my mother paid me a visit today ” she almost blurted out. she usually kept things like this to herself but she just had to get it out.

            a slight smile curled at her lips hearing her words , perhaps because it was the first time she had heard her talk about her boyfriend. it was sweet in a way “ it’s sweet that you guys have such a loving relationship. i’m happy for you ” she smiled , it wasn’t often she saw healthy and happy relationships like that , especially with the people she knew so of course she was happy for her. “ you’re a terrible liar alyssa ”  she commented glancing up to see the plastered on smile but she didn’t push , she never really did. “ well i would prefer it if you stayed and kept me company but if you’re busy don’t let me keep you ” she said casually , she knew she wasn’t the best at making people feel wanted and appreciated but she tried in her own way. she didn’t entirely understand the other woman’s thought process but she tried. 

we’re not in the same boat on that one,  eva.  i love nick.  he’s my everything.  he means the world to me  and i’m not one to hide that.  maybe i just don’t want to be one of those annoying girlfriends that blabber on about their partners.   *   she wasn’t being rude,  merely expressing her point that her and nick were most likely polar opposites to evangeline and adan in that aspect.  it wasn’t until evangeline questioned what was on her mind that her previous thoughts came rushing back   *   it was nothing.  just had a brain fart,  nothing more.   *   she quickly reassured,  plastering on a smile   *   i guess i should leave you be to get on with your packing.  let me know if you need anything yeah?

            “ sure you mention him a lot , but it’s never about how you feel. i’d say we’re the same in that regard ” she said as she observed the other woman’s expression. she wasn’t sure what had changed her demeanour , but something had. she watched for a moment silently as she observed the changes , the quiet. the stillness. it was unlike the alyssa she had grown to know. “ what’s on your mind ? ” she asked not beating around the bush because she didn’t see the need for pretence around her. “ i can tell something is on your mind , so out with it ” she said her tone light , she wasn’t going to force her but she wasn’t the type to just let it go either.
