[  dennis said calmly  ,   breathing deeply and exhaling .  the 5-4-3-2-1 method he had learned in his younger childhood from the school counselor .  it was five things you could see , four things you could feel , three things you could hear , two things you could smell , and one thing you could taste ..  it was a grounding method to remind you of the habits of nature around you .  ]   just breathe mel .  [  he said calmly as he focused on steady breathing . ]

            [  dennis raised a singular eyebrow  .  he was familiar with mel’s way of putting off her own emotions sometimes to reassure others to keep them from worrying .  ]   are you sure  ?   [  he asked in concern .  he could see the goose egg forming on the back of her head .  ]   name five things you see  .   [  he blurted randomly  ,  dennis had a way of coping that he thought that might work for mel   .   he would never ask her straight up   ,   but he was pretty sure mel’s on the autism spectrum herself . ]

whenever there’s a carnival or a fair in pittsburgh he likes to spend most of his time at the petting zoo . he’ll never admit it but he gets homesick even though he’s not close to his parents anymore . 

he may not look like it , but he’s actually pretty damn strong . being a farm boy for his childhood built up his muscle mass , he’s got a sleeper body .  he prefers brains over muscle . 

he’s a very facial expression person, rather than speaking.. sometimes he staggers over his words too much to form coherent sentences, so he mostly uses his face to express what he’s thinking and feeling.

WHILE  SHE  OBVIOUSLY  CAN’T  TAKE  FULL  CREDIT  FOR  HIS  BEDSIDE  MANNER ,   SHE  SEES  BITS  AND  PIECES  OF  THE  ADVICE  SHE’S  GIVEN  HIM  AND  IT  MAKES  HER  FEEL  PROUD ,   BOTH  OF  HIM  AND  HERSELF .        SHE  GIVES  A  FIRM  NOD  AT  HIS  QUESTION .  ]        yep ,   go  ahead  and  put  in  the  orders ,   dr .  whitaker .        i  would  add  a  cbc  and  ua  just  to  be  safe .

            [  dennis’s eyes held a flicker of confidence as he saw samira’s pride in him  .  he valued her input on many levels  ,  her empathy for people showed him that sometimes quality could overweigh quantity  .  dennis went through a small list of questions for his patient . when he was done he looked over at samira . ]  ct and ultrasound ?  [ he asked just to clarify what tests he should run . ]

AS  SHE  LISTENS ,   SHE  CAREFULLY  PERFORMS  AN  ABDOMINAL  EXAM .  ]        guarding  with  palpation  of  the  upper  left  quadrant .        dr .  whitaker ,   any  questions  for  your  patient ?
