the hunter was pressed against the wall , listening to whatever was on the other side to decide whether the werewolf was hungry enough to come back . his knife was in his hand . his gun was somewhere on the floor behind him — dropped when the thing had thrown him across the room , which he was not going to think about right now .
he noticed the other person about three seconds after his vision stopped swimming . close . too close to have gone unnoticed , which meant either they were very good at staying quiet or he’d taken a harder hit than he thought .
probably both .
he cut a sideways look at them , keeping his voice at barely a breath .
“ tell me you have a weapon . “ something shifted outside — slow , dragging . benjamin didn’t flinch . “ and tell me you’re not one of those people who freezes up , because i really don’t have the bandwidth for that tonight . “
he believed it wouldn’t come out not rude . just efficient .
he’d apologize later . maybe or maybe not .
