PrologueShe wasn't supposed to be there. Just a bundle of faded flannel wedged between two trash bins under a broken streetlight. When Leo first pulled the blanket back, we both forgot how to breathe. It wasn’t a discarded doll. It was a baby, barely a few weeks old, staring up at us with impossibly dark, quiet eyes.We should have called the police right then. That was the smart choice, the textbook adult choice. Instead, we panicked, looked at our empty student bank accounts, and carried her back to our cramped apartment "just until morning." That one night turned into a blur of midterms, stolen glances over cheap coffee, and the terrifying, beautiful chaos of learning how to keep a tiny human alive. We thought we were saving her, but the longer she stayed, the more we realized we were the ones being rescued.
