Good morning, friends!! I am here to let you all know that I will be on holidays for the next 2ish weeks! Don't forget that new chapters for "Billionaire Love Rodeo" drops every Friday (I may miss announcements like I did last week...oops :| )

I approach him and lift my arms as if for a hug. Then I snatch one of the coffees and, even though I focus on the warm cup in my hands, I don't miss the flash of disappoint that streaks across Ellis's face. "I am desperate for caffeine."
"You're welcome, then," Ellis chuckles.
"So, what's this all about then?" I ask, gesturing to the town. "You're hosting a rodeo?"
Ellis nods. "My uncle and council are hosting it. I'm just participating in it." His lopsided smile is full of mischief. "Are you going to come watch me?"

How I wound up in Hunter Bay's lone bookstore is a mystery even to me, but I shrug a shoulder and scan the titles surrounding me. "I suppose I'm here for a book. Or maybe a magazine, do you have those? I'm not much of a reader."
"This might not be the best place for you then," the young woman says, coming out from behind the counter. "And no, I don't sell magazines. There's a gas station down the road for those." She crosses her arms, dark eyes eyeing my outfit, my purse, my shoes. "You're the rich girl from New York, hey? Aubrey's friend?"
"What gave it away?" I ask.
The young woman scoffs and takes a duster to a nearby shelf. "Aubrey left an impression on the town, not all of it good. Sure, she and Liam did a lot for this town, but you're all the same. Aubrey came to my store, and after I bandaged her ankle, she gave me money to buy cleaning supplies. You carry yourselves like you own the world."
"I mean, I don't own the world, but Daddy does own a jet that can take me anywhere," I tease. The woman scowls, and I laugh. "Relax, it's a joke. And Aubrey has always been a bit of a bitch. Totally love her for that, you need that attitude in her world, but this—" I wave my hand at the woman and her store— "is absolutely adorable. This place is a bookworm's dream place. And you—you have a killer body, perfectly curvy. And that hair! Mine is a wavy mess unless I straighten and style it every day, but your hair looks effortless."

"I guess we're not going to be besties, huh."
I wrap my arms around my torso, goosebumps racing up my arms. It's at least ten degrees cooler out here than when I first stepped outside. I blame the frigid draft coming from the woman next to me.
"We don't have to get along, but I promise you, there's nothing nefarious going on." Just an elaborate plan to convince my parents that they don't need to play matchmaker with my life.
"Maybe, maybe not." She shrugs. "See you around, Bailey."

I think a lawyer would tell me to run as far from you as possible," Ellis points out.
"Cruel," I mutter, "but it wouldn't be the first time."
"My point exactly," Ellis says. "Look, for this to work, we can't just tell your parents at the end of the summer. Everyone in Hunter Bay will be at the wedding. If my uncle hears about us "dating" at the wedding, there's no doubt he will have questions. No, we must lay the foundation first—convince the town we're dating."
I stare at him, picking my jaw off the floor. "I'm sorry, can you say that again? I think my hearing glitched."
"It's not that deep," Ellis grins, using my own words against me. I don't care if it's a slight, as long as he's smiling. "If we want this to work, we need the town to believe we're dating. You even mentioned that it'd help get Benson off my back. That won't work unless he knows about us before the wedding."

I can't bring myself to look at Ellis, and instead, I focus on the countertop. "You're going to laugh because the timing is crazy, but I may have told my dad that I was dating someone here in Hunter Bay… and your name might have come up."
"My name." Ellis leans back with a disbelieving scoff. "Really?"
"It just happened, I swear," I say. The words spill out of me faster than I can think about what I'm saying. "I didn't mean to, it just came out, but like, it's totally fine. All you have to do is when you meet them, say we're dating. They just need to know that I'm in a serious relationship, then we can pretend we're getting married and then, well, the only thing I can think of is that you die and I become a widow. You won't really be dead, obviously. My parents won't ever step foot in Hunter Bay again—"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Ellis says. He presses his fingers against his temples. "Are all of you New Yorkers this absurd, or just the ones Hunter Bay attracts? You want me to meet your parents and pretend to date you?"

"I'd think you were lying to get yourself out of a situation," my dad points out. "You have never had a serious relationship. What's different about this man?"
Ouch. But not wrong.
I weave a thread of truth into the story, my chest aching when I speak. "He makes me feel seen, that I'm more than my last name."
Oh God, what am I saying? The glass I'd kept around my heart is cracking, and those carefully bottled emotions are seeping through.
"And who is this person that has left such an impact on you?"
If I say his name, there's no going back. It'll be out there. But if I don't, I'm doomed to be with someone my parents pick. Even if it is pretend, at least I'll be "with" someone I want.
"His name is Ellis," I say, and I'm amazed at how sure I sound. "Ellis Blake."

"Aw, but complicated and messy make for the best stories."
"I can tell you don't have a concussion," Ellis sighs. "Benson and I hooked up a few times. That's it. He's…well, just be careful with him, okay?"
"Oh, please, I can handle him," I scoff, "I once dated a yakuza member."
Ellis stops dead in his tracks. "You what?"
