Can we please give Ethan some credit?
Discussion
I'm not going to make an accusatory comment like "Everyone hates Ethan, but... etc.", so don't take it that way, I just noticed that many people don't seem to value him as the awesome protagonist he is.
The guy had NO combat experience and no idea what he was facing in the entire first game he participated in. He threw himself headfirst into the situation to desperately try to find/rescue his wife!
The consensus among fans that I've seen is that he's not in the top 5 because he's not skilled and proficient enough with weapons to be labeled a "badass" main character. I vehemently disagree that he deserves the title of badass.
It's because he has no idea what he's doing that he's so badass. He's willing to face anything, despite his lack of experience. His unwavering will to save his wife, and then his daughter, is what touches me so deeply. He'll literally fight God if it means giving his daughter even a tiny chance to survive.
Then, between games: He realized it was far from over and sought training with professional (badass) soldiers to ensure that the next time someone messed up at his breakfast, he'd be better prepared. The guy saw where he was failing and sought to improve. Bravo!

Also, he had very shallow one-liners throughout the game. I really liked him in Biohazard, though!

Ethan Winters BROKE into a home and killed a mother and her three children, and then walked away acting like he’s the tragic hero.
Alcina was justified in trying to kill him.
Just because they were monsters; he escalated every single interaction to kill.
I get it, he isn’t a villain, but he was definitely an antagonist. He came into their home and killed them all genuinely for no good reason.

@ kaikcarvalhosouzadea The interaction between him and Rose in the 'Shadow of Rose' DLC brought tears to my eyes, to be honest. His love is so strong that he found a way to fight Mother Miranda again, giving Rose a chance to find herself!
We see a similar situation in RE2, with Leon being a rookie and Claire just a young woman capable of fighting... but with Ethan, I really felt how the game intended it: an ordinary guy who has to fight against impossible odds to achieve a truly admirable goal.
Anyway, I think Ethan is a much better representation for the audience/player. I'm incredibly excited waiting for Requiem to finally be released, and I already love that Grace is an analyst forced into the field.
Just some thoughts I wanted to share, what are yours? :)
**spoiler tag is for those who haven't played Shadow of Rose and don't know that Ethan is helping her the whole time**
