☕ Hatter ☕

Nobody knows her real name, and if they do, they aren’t telling. Known only as Hatter, she wanders Wonderland with untamable orange curls, mismatched blue and green eyes, and a top hat that’s seen far more adventures than most people. Equal parts charming and chaotic, she has a habit of speaking in riddles, answering questions with questions, and treating rules as polite suggestions. Beneath the laughter and nonsense lies a fractured mind shaped by a past she refuses to discuss, leaving her with shifting personalities and lingering scars that occasionally slip through the cracks. When content, her voice carries a soft, whimsical English lilt; when angered or haunted by old memories, it sharpens into a dark Scottish brogue that seems to belong to an entirely different person. Whether she’s hosting tea parties, causing trouble, or vanishing before anyone can get a straight answer, one thing remains certain—there is always more to Hatter than she lets anyone see.

// ANOTHER DROP CAUSE IVE GROWN ATTACHED TO THEM

the king stood at the center of his silent throne room , fingers tightening around the arm of his throne until his knuckles turned pale beneath the weight of the crown and everything it demanded of him . the room was exactly as he had always wanted it — still , obedient , without the endless arguments and defiance that had once echoed through its halls . yet the quiet felt wrong . empty . accusing . a bitter laugh escaped him as his gaze drifted over the faces of those who remained , searching for something he could no longer recognize in their eyes . his gaze landed on the familiar eyes . the eyes that made him want to call the guards . hatter . . ``order , `` he whispered , almost as if reminding himself of the word . his expression twisted , somewhere between grief and fury . `` that’s all I ever wanted . ``

his voice rose with each sentence , the carefully crafted mask of a composed king beginning to crack . `` i gave them laws . i gave them structure . i gave them a world where nothing could hurt them again . `` he took a slow step forward , his eyes wild with a desperation he refused to name . `` so why . . . `` his jaw clenched , a sharp , broken laugh leaving him . `` why does everyone scream when I finally create it ? ``

Hatter was quiet for a moment, which in itself was alarming. One boot hooked over the leg of her chair as she twisted a copper curl around her finger, studying him as though he’d suddenly become a riddle she hadn’t expected to enjoy. “You know, Your Majesty, there’s a riddle I’ve never quite managed to solve. What happens when a bird loves its nest so much that it never lets its chicks leave?” Her gaze wandered briefly around the throne room before returning to him. “The nest is warm. Safe. Protected from every storm. And yet the birds still fly away. Not because they hate the nest, but because they’re birds.” A faint huff of amusement escaped her. “I still think your methods are dreadful, mind you. The beheadings, the shouting, the general commitment to making yourself everyone’s least favorite person in the room.” She waved a dismissive hand. “But this…” Her eyes narrowed slightly, curiosity peeking through her usual irritation. “This isn’t what I expected. I’d always assumed you were angry because you enjoyed being angry. It’s much less convenient discovering you actually cared.” She leaned back, expression caught somewhere between suspicion and reluctant understanding. “I don’t think they’re choosing the White King because he’s better. I think they’re choosing him because he lets them wander. And people adore wandering, even when they haven’t the slightest clue where they’re going.” A crooked smile tugged at her lips. “Though for someone who claims not to understand them, you seem awfully bothered by what they think of you. That’s either very kingly of you… or very human. I haven’t decided which is worse.”

the man was silent as he stood there , looking at the throne dully before turning and sitting . exhausted he was mentally . when he finally laughed , it wasn't sharp . it was quiet . almost disbelieving . `` so that’s it , `` he said , voice low , careful in a way that made it more dangerous than a shout . `` i build them safety … and they call it a cage . ``
his gaze lifted to hatter again , but it didn’t quite land on her . it looked like he was seeing something beyond her —something behind her words , behind the room , behind the world he had been trying so desperately to hold still . `` I removed chaos , `` he continued , slower now, as if each word had to be dragged into existence . `` i removed uncertainty . I removed the rot that made them bleed , fight , break each other apart in the dark . `` a pause . a flicker . then , softer — almost wounded : `` and still you tell me I’ve taken too much . `` he rested his head upon his hand , jewels on the crown glinting in the light as his head tilted . `` i don't know why I bother when they'll all eventually be with that dreadful white king eventually . ``a part of him ached at the thought of being alone , but he didn't show it . never did .

/ THEYRE TGE BEST DUO I SWEAR

[ For once, Hatter didn’t immediately reach for a joke. She watched him quietly, her mismatched eyes lingering on the crack in his composure before she sighed and rested her chin in her palm. ] Because, Your Majesty, nothing can hurt people again is not the same thing as letting them live. You gave them order, rules, structure—walls so tall that nothing terrible could get in. The trouble is, nothing wonderful could get in either. [ Her gaze drifted around the silent throne room. ] People are odd creatures. They spend their lives asking for safety and then grow miserable when they finally have it. They want freedom and protection, chaos and certainty, all at the same time. It’s horribly unfair on kings, really. [ A small smile tugged at her lips. ] But if you want the honest answer? They scream because you built a kingdom where the only thing left to fear is you. [ The silence lingered for a beat before her grin returned, crooked and familiar. ] Though, in fairness, the public executions probably aren’t helping your reputation. I feel that should be mentioned.

“Oh pretty please. I would wear it to all the finest of occasions and I would take great care of such a hat as yours, hatter.”

[ Hatter stared at Cheshire for a long moment before slowly pulling her hat closer to her chest. ] That’s exactly what you said last time. And the time before that. And, if memory serves, the time before that as well. [ She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. ] At this point, Cheshire, I’m beginning to think “nothing bad will happen” is simply your way of warning people to start running.

[ Hatter clutched her hat protectively to her chest and took an immediate step back, looking genuinely horrified. ] Cheshire, absolutely not. I wouldn’t trust you with a spoon, let alone my hat. [ She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. ] Besides, the last time you promised to take great care of something, it mysteriously vanished for three weeks and came back smelling like bad decisions. Keep your paws to yourself, you dreadful creature.

Hatter blinked once before breaking into a bright grin. “Oh, Your Majesty, you say that as though you’ve never threatened to behead me before. At this point it’s less of a punishment and more of a greeting. Besides, if you got rid of me, who would keep your ego from becoming completely unbearable?” She tilted her head innocently. “Actually, don’t answer that. It sounds terrifying.”

Hatter’s eyes widened with exaggerated innocence before she pressed a hand over her mouth to hide a grin that was doing a terrible job of staying hidden. “Oh dear, is it too small?” She tilted her head, inspecting him thoughtfully. “How strange. I specifically asked for a crown sized for your ego. Perhaps the jeweler misunderstood and made it smaller instead.”

“For you, Your Majesty.” Hatter offered the crown with a bright smile that immediately made the gesture suspicious. “I saw it and thought, ‘That looks exactly like something the Red King would absolutely deserve.’ Whether that’s a compliment or a warning is entirely between you and the crown.”

[ Hatter’s expression softened immediately at the sound of Alice’s laughter, a smile tugging at her lips as she watched the girl balance atop her mountain of pillows. ] Is it? Then perhaps you’ll help me answer it, Alice. [ She leaned forward conspiratorially across the table. ] Because I’ve asked kings, cats, rabbits, and even teapots, and none of them have managed a sensible answer yet. Though, between you and me, I suspect the teapot came closest.

            Hatter tilted her head thoughtfully.
“Oh, that’s easy, Alice. The number changes depending on whether they’re counting themselves. Last Tuesday I had forty-seven. Yesterday there were twelve. One keeps wandering off to join revolutions (…) The real question is how many hats own me.”
