The poem was inspired to me partly by my life in Paris and partly by the famous lines of Vinícius de Moraes, the great Brazilian poet and songwriter: "A vida é a arte do encontro, embora haja tantos desencontros pela vida" ("Life is the art of meeting, although there are so many missed meetings in life")... The original song in Portuguese, "Samba da benção," set to music by Baden Powell with lyrics by Vinicius, was recorded in 1967 and published in 1967 in the album "Vinícius". Then in 1969, an Italian version was made of it, "Samba delle Benedizioni" with lyrics by Sergio Bardotti, recorded on the album "La vita, amico, è l'arte dell'incontro."
I lived many years in Brazil and those verses always buzzed in my head without turning into something concrete, although they aroused numerous reflections in me, which I often shared with other people... always citing the "inspirational source". Now, finally, I have managed to recapture those verses and turn them into poetry, but telling a sort of story about a missed meeting... I think several men, especially, will recognize themselves in the poem/story!

La poesia mi è stata ispirata un po' dalla mia vita a Parigi e un po' dai famosi versi di Vinícius de Moraes, grande poeta e cantautore brasiliano: "A vida é a arte do encontro, embora haja tantos desencontros pela vida" ("La vita è l'arte dell'incontro, sebbene ci siano tanti incontri mancati nella vita")... La canzone originale in portoghese, "Samba da benção", musicata da Baden Powell con testo di Vinicius, fu incisa nel 1967 brano musicale scritto su testo e pubblicato nel 1967 nella raccolta Vinícius. Nel 1969 ne venne poi fatta una versione in italiano, "Samba delle benedizioni" con il testo di Sergio Bardotti, incisa nell'album "La vita, amico, è l'arte dell'incontro".
Ho vissuto tanti anni in Brasile e quei versi hanno sempre ronzato nella mia testa senza trasformarsi in qualcosa di concreto, pur suscitandomi numerose riflessioni, che spesso ho condiviso con altre persone... citando sempre la "fonte ispiratrice" Ora, finalmente, sono riuscito a ricatturare quei versi e a trasformarli in poesia, ma raccontando una specie di storia su un incontro mancato... credo che vari uomini, soprattutto, si riconosceranno nella poesia/storia!

P.S. All the poems from the same collection were originally conceived and written in Italian, but I have also translated them into English -- taking into account, however, that sometimes it was necessary to change some words or adapt some verses in the English version, either due to the lack of equivalent terms in English or due to the need to adjust rhymes or metric.
