“Hey, new girl,” she called out, loud enough for everyone to hear. “You actually think you can keep up with us?”
          
          I ignored her at first, focusing on my warm-up. But she wasn’t about to let it go.
          
          “You hear me, little girl? Or are you too scared to answer?” Her voice was laced with mockery, her tone a deliberate challenge.
          
          I straightened, turning to face her. The entire yard had gone quiet, all eyes on us. “I’m not here to play games,” I said evenly.
          
          Sera pushed off the wall, striding toward me with deliberate menace. “Oh, I’m not playing either. I just don’t see how someone like you could possibly survive out there. You don’t look like much.”
          
          She circled me, her eyes raking over my body with calculated contempt. “What’s the matter? Daddy’s little soldier can’t handle a real fight? Maybe you should stick to playing dress-up.”
          
          The words were a knife to my pride, but I kept my expression neutral. “You don’t know anything about me.”

“Hurry!” I shouted, ushering the others through.
          
          Jaide stumbled as she passed me, her face pale with pain, but there was no time to stop. Marcy and Kenny were next, the boy sobbing in fear as they squeezed through the narrow opening.
          
          Daries was the last. He hesitated for a moment, looking back at the horde of zombies, their twisted faces illuminated by the dim light of the tunnel.
          
          “Daries, come on!” I yelled, my voice filled with a desperation I couldn’t hide.
          
          He snapped out of it, running towards me just as the first zombie lunged, its decayed hand swiping at him. I grabbed him, pulling him through the door and slamming it shut just as the zombie crashed into it.

"Remove your mask," I ordered, wanting to see her face to make sure she wasn't one of those creatures. She stared at me in shock, shaking her head as if she couldn't believe what I was asking.
          
          "No! I already told you why I pointed the gun! Just please, put that gun down-"
          
          "One," I began counting, my voice low and threatening.
          
          "No! I won't!"
          
          "Two," I continued, my grip tightening on the gun.
          
          "Please, kid, listen to me! You don't know what you're doing-"
          
          "Three!" I fired the gun at her side, the bullet embedding into the wall next to her. The loud bang echoed in the small room, and I quickly re-cocked the gun, ready to fire again.
