Tiresias was most likely Trans, NonBinary, or Genderfluid!
Tiresias is one of the most compelling figures in Greek mythology, known as the blind prophet of Thebes whose insight surpasses that of those around him. Though physically blind, he possesses a profound ability to perceive truth, especially regarding fate and the will of the gods. Unlike many characters driven by pride or ambition, Tiresias is defined by his role as a reluctant truth-teller. He does not seek power; instead, he speaks only when necessary, often aware that his revelations will bring discomfort or suffering.
A crucial part of Tiresias's identity is the story of how he became blind. According to this version of the myth, Tiresias had lived as both a man and a woman after striking a pair of mating snakes, giving him a unique understanding of both genders. Because of this, Zeus and Hera asked him to settle a dispute about which gender experiences greater pleasure. Tiresias sided with Zeus, claiming that women experience more pleasure than men. Angered by his answer, Hera punished him by striking him blind. Zeus, unable to reverse this, compensated Tiresias by granting him prophecy and a long life. His blindness thus becomes more than a punishment-it marks his transformation into a true seer.
In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, Tiresias represents truth in its clearest form. He reveals that Oedipus himself is the source of Thebes' suffering, highlighting the irony that the blind man sees the truth while the sighted king does not. Ultimately, Tiresias symbolizes the burden of knowledge and the cost of truth.
