Pulp fiction describes a genre of fiction that began to emerge in the first half of the twentieth-century in America. Pulp fiction was cheaply produced, escapist, and made reading more widely available to a mass audience.
Defined by sensationalistic themes, such as gore horror and weird science, and the establishment of new character types such as the hardboiled detective and the femme fatale of noir -- #pulp freed the book from the bounds of the literary establishment, and opened up new spaces for self-expression and creative experimentation.
