You should get the readers more attached to the old man at least I have the tragedy happen you just start at the grave stone so ha you have no reason to say that, I have  my reader attached... god! 

If you ever edit your book, have the mother die later on, let the readers grow to like her and once the reader and mother bond, then tragidy. I felt no sorrow for the mother when she died at the start. Yell at me if you like for posting this but I'm just saying.
