Endings are not really the end. They are not at one of the sides, one of the edges, of our moments. They are the core, the most determining part. They haunt us, and they lead our steps. They make us do things in a different way than we would if they weren't there.
Death is the most ineludible of the endings - or is it?-. It makes us become subjects of the kingdom of time, which humiliates us to the most by making us rot away. Cease to exist. Be forgotten.
However, I have recently come to understand that our submission might not be inexorable. I have learnt that aging might be susceptible to treatment, just like many other illnesses. Theoretically, if we figured out what that treatment is, we could be immortal.
We might not be doomed, after all.
This discovery has inevitably made me wonder what would happen after.
I have decided to rehearse the future - Is that even possible, or is it another trick I have tried to play on time ?- and write a novel in which immortality is already happening, and merging with betrayal, passion, disappointment and love. It is called: "If I live forever, I can live now", and, starting July 21st, I will be uploading a new chapter every day.
I have decided to set the story in Oxford, because wishful thinking would nowhere fit better than it does in the city of dreaming spires, of dreaming spires that point to the infinite - or perhaps symbol of finiteness - sky.
I have dared to try to find an answer to the matters that have arisen in my reflections over and over again: If we could live forever, would we still have the carpe diem drive that living counterclockwise grants us with? Or would we become unmotivated and lazy?
Read "If I live forever, I can live now" and let me know what you think!
The sequel will be titled "If I live forever, can I live now?", and the first chapter will be up on September 15th 2016.
