The #StopSocialMedia campaign was created by Emma in Jan. 2016 to help promote the idea that social media is addicting and can have a bad influence. Social media in moderation is acceptable, like many other things, and only if it is used in a harmless way. But most of the time, this is not the case. Social media has become an addiction much like smoking and drinking with various side effects such as bullying, distorted body image, depression and anxiety.
There are so many ways social media has impacted the writing society, character image and how normal being antisocial has come being two.
To become part of the campaign, the easiest way is to add the hashtag #StopSocialMedia to your work or your profile and show the world you're not afraid to not believe everything in social media and you refuse to succumb to it. If you wish to write a book or already have written a book involving a way you have supported this campaign, you are also most welcome to add the sticker (in the link above) to your cover.
All books using the hashtag will be added to the public reading list. If your book isn't added after a day or so, feel free to pm and let me know. You are also most welcome to suggest a new reading list, if you have an idea.
Please note : I am not fully against social media. It is perfectly acceptable to be a part of this campaign and still have accounts. I am against the influence it has, the control and the distorted reality it coaxes us into believing possible. I am against people scrolling through Instagram and thinking 'I wish I looked like that' at a picture of someone who is considered PERFECT because of their body shape when in fact, all shapes and sizes are beautiful in their own ways, or someone thinking 'she's ugly' when in fact, there is beauty in everyone - this is what I don't support.
