Welcome to part 2. I wanted to note at the beginning of this chapter that New Moon focuses heavily on the Quileute tribe. Smeyer's characterization of this tribe is incredibly misguided, misinformed, and racist. I want to do better than her with my characterization of this culture and the people within it. I will likely make mistakes as I was not familiar with this tribe before starting this project. The research I've done on this tribe has helped me immensely, but I am in no way an expert. I highly recommend taking the time to read native written books such as Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley (Ojibwe) or my personal favorite Pushing the Bear by Diane Glancy (Cherokee).
