" Wow, these seem fun," Fitz stated eagerly after we read the list Linh had given us as we walked towards  the Elderly Home. At the same time, I felt annoyed because I hated Christmas, but at the same time I felt somewhat happy to do something for the community ( plus Fitz was pretty fun to hang around).
We had talked for a while and Fitz had told me he was originally from Los Angeles, visiting some family in London for winter break. My heart leapt as he flashed yet another perfect smile at me.
I smacked myself, I had to focus! I wasn't here to day dream about stupid boys. But the more I lectured myself, the more I couldn't stop staring at Fitz.
"Soooo are you excited for Christmas? Can you believe it's already Christmas Eve?" I asked nervously, twirling my thumbs. I expected Fitz to reply excitedly, but when I looked at him a single tear ran down his pale face.
"Umm, my grandmother died 2 years ago on Christmas. Christmas isn't the best time of year for me, but I still enjoy it somewhat," Fitz replied, a bit  shaken.
"Oh, I'm sorry. My dad left on Christmas. He hasn't come back ever since," I mentioned staring at my feet. I looked up and Fitz smiled shyly at me.
Suddenly, a two leveled, brick building came into view. A golden sign hung at the azure painted door, in curly letters, the words " London Elderly Home" were spelt. We walked towards the door and I knocked on it. Soon after, a cherry, middle aged woman with bright green eyes welcomed us in.
"Ooh , you guys must be Marella and Fitz! Come on in," the woman stated softly, shooting us a warm smile.
Quickly, we took off our winter coats and followed the lady towards the main room. The inside was quite large with loads of Christmas decorations and plaid furniture.
Then, we had arrived in the main room. People, probably over the age of 65, were all around playing games and dancing. A warm smile spread across my face, but suddenly disappeared as I turned to face Fitz.
He was trembling and his bright teal eyes were full of tears. Suddenly he whispered, "My grandmother used to stay here before she died. When I came to London for vacation, I used to visit her a lot. Brings back a lot of memories."
Out of the blue, Fitz hugged me. I stayed frozen at first, but then I hugged him back.
"Ok lovebirds, time to start volunteering, " the lady chuckled, making my checks redden as red as a tomato as my insides did flip flops.

[a while later]

Excitement bubbled up inside me as I put the finishing touches on my gingerbread house. After I put the last gumdrop, I pumped my fist in the air, feeling victorious. To my surprise, the day had gone really well. At the elderly home, we danced to Christmas music and made cookies and at the children's orphanage we decorated and gave them Christmas gifts.
Seeing how much the children had been through made me feel stupid about feeling sorry about myself. Here I was sulking that my dad had left, while these children here didn't even have parents. Fitz also seemed to look more cheerful after visiting the orphanage. It felt pretty great to help people. Now, we were at the soup kitchen having a ginger beard making competition.
I burst out laughing as I saw Fitz's gingerbread house. The gingerbread was breaking, and all the icing had tumbled down on the plate. Fitz blushed as I burst out laughing, tears streaming down my face.
"As you can see, I'm not the best at this," Fitz mumbled, grinning.
"Yea I can see that," I chuckled.
A small grin spread across my face. Today had been one of the best days of my entire life. I felt revived like a sudden boost of happy energy had flooded my body. I soon realized that sudden happiness had come from Fitz. He made me feel like I was worth something and that I wasn't alone in my situation. He made me feel loved, something I had never felt before.

[next day : Christmas 🎄]

I woke up to loud noise of someone knocking on the front door. Realization hit me- it was Christmas! Normally, I wouldn't be so enthusiastic, but Fitz and I had planned to meet at 4 p.m. at the park. I had to admit, I was so excited I had only slept for 2 hours last night.
Quickly, I ran down the stairs to open the door. Surprisingly, mom hadn't come downstairs as yet. She was probably still sleeping. I opened the door and my jaw dropped. Right in front of me, my dad stood. He had grown out his hair and had grown a beard, but I could recognize him any day.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I trembled in my shoes. I didn't know how to react it was too much. Not knowing what to do, I  ran out of the house, towards the park.
"Marella!" my dad called, but I kept running, I needed to get away.
To my shock, Fitz was already at the park. Confusion filled my mind.

"Fitz what are you doing here? Also, my dad came back and I just don't know what do," I started, but Fitz stopped me.
"Marella, I came here to tell you that I'm leaving to go back to Los Angeles today," Fitz remarked.
"You're leaving?" I cried, my head spinning. This couldn't be happening.
"I'm sorry, but I have to go. Bye Marella," Fitz replied.

I fell to the floor, crying uncontrollably. My dad had just come back, and now Fitz was already leaving. I felt betrayed. Fitz had left when I needed him most.
I know he had left to go back home, but he didn't even show any emotion when waved goodbye. It looked like he didn't even care. I felt so stupid to think Fitz liked me. My heart broke as I walked back to my house. I didn't want to go back home, but it was all I could do at the moment.
As I returned, my dad ran to me and embraced me tightly. I stayed still at first, but I eventually hugged him back.We cried together. I was mad at him for leaving me for so long, but the hug made everything feel better.
Smiling, my dad told me, "Merry Christmas Marella,".

Ok hope y'all enjoyed! Thanks for reading! Vote and comment if you want to!
Byeee! Happy Holidays ❄️⛄️
