31st October 1993.
"You need to push Storm." The midwife urged her patient.
"No, Rane said he would be here. He promised." Storm panted as she desperately tried to stop the imminent birth of her baby. "He has to be here."
"You have to push now!" The midwife commanded as blood began to spread across the bed spread.
With Storm's last bit of energy, she pushed her babe into the world and in the deafening silence of her lifeless daughter she whispered her name, Sunshine. As Storm took her last breath she felt the flood of relief, hearing Sunshine crying out in mourning for her mother.
Meanwhile, Sunshine's father was desperately trying to reach his wife after hearing she was in labour. He hadn't known that at the exact same moment he took the life of the rival biker, his wife too took her last breath and his daughter took her first.
The midwife stared down at the lifeless woman and closed her eyes before saying a quiet prayer. Cuddling the child close she noticed the strange birthmark on her shoulder. It looked like a snake eating it's own tail, Ouroboros. The devout woman crossed herself three times and put the child in the cot alone for fear of her. The symbol of life, death and rebirth standing out like a bad omen she wanted nothing to do with.
When Rane arrived home he was drenched from the sudden storm that ravaged through the desert town. There he found the midwife wiping the sweat of labour away from his wife's pale face. He fell to her side as he wept for the woman who held his heart. For hours he wept without noticing the silent baby laying docile and content in her cot behind him. It wasn't until the coroner removed Storm's body from the room that the baby cried out.
He turned to the midwife who made no movement to pick up the child so he did. As soon as she was in his arms he felt comfort, warmth from his ray of Sunshine. The despair he felt moments ago faded as he cradled his daughter close to his chest. He would protect her with his life, just as her mother had done.
