It was unbelievable how people changed their minds after Godzilla's first attack.
Unbelievable, but understandable.
Their need to evacuate after the initial attack was unparalleled, and there was an unbelievably large crowd around the airships, desperately trying to get out of the kingdom to safety.
During the first attack, Ironwood had gotten the idea to construct electric towers around Vale to keep Godzilla out. Every construction worker in Remnant worked together to get the towers set up.
I was surprised Godzilla hadn't returned the next night. Maybe I knew him a little better than I thought. Still, these precautions needed to be taken. As much as it hurt, I had no doubt in my mind Godzilla would come back, and we had to get everyone out of the kingdom before he did.
It hurt to refer to (Y/N) as Godzilla, but I couldn't call him by his real name anymore. I wasn't mad at him. I understood why he'd become this monster, and I felt heartbroken for him. I just couldn't refer to this monster by the same name of the shy yet kind faunus I once knew.
I was usually there to assist in the evacuations. There were so many people that getting them out was a chore, but a chore we had to finish fast.
I constantly saw scared children, and parents trying to reassure those kids. There were people pushing through the line to get to an airship, and I'd always have to push them back, though sometimes other staff or students did before I could get close.
One day, I felt a tugging on my cape. I looked down to see a child looking up at me.
"Miss?" he said. "I can't find my mom."
I smiled down to him, and lifted him up. "Don't worry. I'll help you find her."
I walked through the crowd, constantly asking people if they knew the kid. But nobody did.
"I guess we're sticking together longer than I thought," I said. "What's your name?"
"Y/N," the child said.
I cringed. Was the universe toying with me? Seriously, what are the chances?
"What's your name?" Y/N asked.
"I-I'm Ruby," I said. "Ruby Rose."
"Hi," Y/N said. "You're very nice."
I giggled. "Thank you. You are too."
"Ruby?" he said. "Where did that monster come from?"
I grew more emotional.
"He... He was a old friend of mine," I said.
"You were friends with that thing?" he said.
"Well," I smiled, as the memory of that night came to mind, "we were more than friends."
"Then why is he hurting us?" he asked.
"It's complicated," I said.
"Well, I can listen," he said.
I smiled at him. "Thanks." I started to explain. "He used to be a faunus. A very special faunus. He was very shy, but he was also very nice. But then he started getting bullied."
"Why did they bully him?" he asked.
"Because he was different," I said.
"And... is that a bad thing?"
"No. It's not. But they didn't understand that. They bullied him for no reason, other than he was different from them. One day he fought back. Everybody was afraid of him, so they put him in jail. He was lonely, and scared, so he turned into that monster."
"Is that when he started hurting people?"
"No. He didn't want to hurt anyone. He went to the water to figure out what to do. And then I was tricked. Some people weren't thinking, and they tricked me into finding him. I was going to try and help him, but they hurt him. He thought I was trying to trick him, and he wanted to hurt everybody because of it."
"So... are you going to kill him?"
"I don't want to," I said. "I want to help him. We all do. It's going to be hard."
He stayed quiet for a minute, thinking about what I said. "Ruby?"
"Yeah?"
"If you save him, can I be friends with him?"
I smiled. "Absolutely. I'm sure he'd love to have a friend like you."
I continued looking for his parents, but they were nowhere to be found. I stuck with him for a few days as the evacuation continued. I would've dropped him off in an airship, but he refused to leave without his parents. So I stuck with him.
Then, one night, my teammates ran up to me.
"Ruby!" Yang said. "(Y/N) was spotted! We need to get back to Beacon!"
I looked at Y/N.
"But what about my mom?" he said.
I thought about my decision for a second, before turning to my friends.
"I'm staying here," I said.
"What?!" they all said in sync.
"Ruby, he'll kill you!" Blake said.
"I know," I said. "But I promised this little guy I'd find his mom."
"(Y/N) will kill him anyway, you dunce!" Weiss said. "Bring him with you!"
I thought about it. I knew how much he wanted to find his mother, and I couldn't let him down.
"Y/N, what's your mom's name?" I asked him.
"Emi Lectrie," he said.
"Thanks," I said. I looked to the others. "Take him with you."
"What?!" Yang shouted. "Ruby, what about you?!"
"I'm going to find his mom," I said. "If what he said about her is true, she wouldn't leave without him. I'm going to find her, and bring her to Beacon."
I handed Y/N to Yang.
"Are you sure about this?" Blake said.
"Not really," I said. "But I have to try. Besides, I might be able to talk (Y/N) out of this."
"Okay," Weiss said. "Good luck."
I turned around to leave.
"Ruby!" Yang said.
I stopped, and turned to look at her.
"Just... be careful," she said.
I smiled, and nodded to her, hiding the complete terror for what I was about to do.
My teammates ran off, with Y/N in Yang's arms.
I turned back around, and I could hear Godzilla's roar in the distance.
And so began the worst night of my life.
