Days following the rescue of the children, news channels have been asking for any statements from the children. All were declined and a police officer was guarding the children in the hotel across the hospital.
Sam spent his breaks with James. The entire police department gave him little presents such as flowers and teddy bears. He was doing a little better than a few days ago, but there wasn't any major improvement. His blood pressure and heart rate was still too low for them to wake him up.
"Hey Sam," Steve said coming in the hospital room. "Any change?"
"Still sleeping. I don't think they've seen someone, let alone a child like this."
"Yeah, it sickens me too. But here is something crazy, a few agents went through the woman's home and found five adoption applications for some of the children. Including one for Mishka. She just chose not to give them up because less foster children meant less money from the state."
"That's messed up."
"That's not the worst part, there is a child's body buried in the backyard. And it was recent, the body hasn't began decomposing."
"By starving?"
"She was strangled. Looked to be six maybe seven years old. I am going to ask the children if they know of the little girl."
"People are crazy, man. Hopefully we can get these kids into good homes."
"Yeah, they still have to go through a bit of therapy before they can go to the homes also we are going to do a psychological evaluation of every adopter so we can be sure. This is all for CPS to do, we've done our part." Sam slightly frowned but didn't say anything. Steve noticed that. "I think you're getting attached to him."
"What? No."
"Yes, you spend every minute of your free time with him. Even though, he is heavily sedated. You're attached."
"I'm just making sure nothing happens to him."
"Right, he is one of the few kids who didn't have an adoption application."
"Bye Steve." Sam said. Steve smiled then walked out. Sam's break was almost over, he stood up and put his coat on only to be met with the nurse.
"Oh, hi, didn't realize you were still here."
"Just leaving. Is he doing okay?"
"Slowly. We can probably start to lower the sedation soon."
"Oh good. Do you know anything else about his relatives? Maybe as to why they don't want him."
"I don't know much, I'm just the nurse in charge of him."
"Okay, here is my number, if something happens please call me first."
"Will do."
"Thank you." Sam looked at the boy one last time then left. Sam went back to the station. A lot was on his mind and the more Sam thought about what Steve said about him getting attached, the more he realized he think he was.
Another few days passed without much update about James. But Sam has been ontop of his foster parents case. The foster father was still at large. The foster mother kept forcing the court to push back the date of her trial. She claimed that she had did nothing to the children and that they were hurting her and she reacted in self-defense. Sam was not hateful person but this woman was getting his nerves the more she testified her accusations.
He finished today's shift without much to do. He began packing up when he received a call.
"Mr. Wilson?" It was the nurse.
