Sheila's POV

We jumped at the sound of a gun being fired.

"What was that?" I asked.

"I'm... not sure," my boyfriend said. "Do you want me to check it out?"

"It could just be Kyle," I said. "He does like to practice his aiming."

Alex looked worried. "He only fired one shot," he said. "And that's not normal for Kyle. He always fired at least two shots."

"Maybe he ran out of ammo," I suggested.

Alex still didn't look convinced. "I'm going to check on him," he told me. "Just to make sure."

I watched Alex until he disappeared from view, then I looked down, as I watched the remaining Frostbourne footsoldiers train with our army.

At first, I tried to ignore the screams coming from Alex in Kyle's bedroom. But, it was a fruitless task.

I covered my ears, trying to block out Alex's screams of despair.

Nothing helped.

Why was I even trying to ignore it? I already knew the truth.

Kyle, Alex's best friend, and later, one of my closest friends, was dead.
