As my morning with Newt grew longer, the sky grew gloomier. Which was very abnormal for the Glade. Most days, the sky was clear and sunny, it was warm all twelve months of the year. Today was different, it was overcast and windy, even with the over looming stone walls. I believed a storm was rolling in.
Newt and I were making small talk, awkwardness was still caught in the air, but I tried my best to ignore it. Newt was making an attempt to be friends with me and I couldn't destroy that with my worries.
I caught Newt staring at the sky, also puzzled by its' change today, "How... how odd?"
I laughed, continuing to harvest our potatoes, looking back at him. He had stood straight to give his back a break from his crouched position, he had also tucked his arms into his t-shirt. I guess it was colder than normal today with all the wind...
I unwrapped the flannel I had around my waist and held it out to him.
"No," he said flatly.
I rolled my eyes, "Come on, Newt, don't be stubborn. I'm not using it and Cally sure as hell doesn't need another shucking patient to look after." He took it after my argument but I knew he wasn't happy about it.
I finished tying the twine around the second sack of potatoes and handed one to Newt, "Come on, I wanna get Fry and Leah these potatoes and then check on Cally and the Greenie."
He looked a bit spaced out, but he nodded and joined me in my walk.
After dropping the sacks of potatoes off in the kitchen -Leah and Frypan weren't around- we went up the stairs to the Med-Bay. We entered to see Ben awake and standing, he was stretching and Cally was writing on a clip board.
Newt snatched a piece of gum from Cally's desk and plopped on the cot Ben had spent the night on, it had since been replaced with new linens. Ben started bouncing up and down, I suppose he was just now well enough to do physical activity. And who knows how long it's been since he's done any exercise.
"Hey, uh... Ben, why don't you go for a walk? You look like you could use one-"
Cally looked up from her clipboard, "Oh I'm so stupid- you're right, Felix. You haven't been able to walk around yet, have you, Ben? Come on, I need a break too. I'll give you the tour."
Ben started, confused, "But isn't Nick or Alby supposed to-"
Cal rolled her eyes, "Oh shush, Greenbean. I've been here just as long as them, I'm fully capable of showing ya around. Besides, I'm practically the only person you know here..." She set the clipboard face-down on the desk and slipped her weather-resistant boots on. Cally got lucky with her shoes, WICKED only sent one pair for every person, they were labelled with our names, so we didn't choose which one we received. They fit comfortably but sometimes I wished I had gotten something that wouldn't soak up all the mud and water that was in the fields. The tennis shoes I had were light and flexible, not very ideal for my job.
"Oh, wait, Cally," I grab her arm before she leaves with Ben. "Newt and I dropped off potatoes in the kitchen for Fry and Leah. They weren't there... do you happen to know where they've gone?"
Her jaw clenched, "My best guess is a break but... I've got no clue."
Ben pulled on a jacket, where he found it I had no clue, "They're talking with two people out in the crop fields. I'm surprised you guys didn't catch them on your way over here."
The three of us gave him a puzzled look, how would he know that?
Ben shrugged defensively, "What?! Spending days cooped up in here with the window... a boy gets observant! They're talking to a boy with pimpled skin and a girl with pale skin and short choppy black hair."
