The room I am in is dark and gloomy. Around me I notice that another person is here. I gently roll my neck and send a shiver down my spine. Immediately, I feel my shoulders respond to that action by shaking. Once the shiver is done, I sigh. The tension that comes out makes me a little more aware of how un-ladylike I am acting. Behave yourself, I advise, this could lead to what you've wanted. Just that thought brings joy to my body and lifts my cheeks. My lips curve into a smile that hides what my suspicions are.
When I get a better look into the room, I notice a few other girls about my age, 17. You can tell by the sore look on their faces that most of them have hardly ever had a day to themselves. Also, none of the girls that I saw around me looked familiar. I don't think any of these girls were drawn for the Selection. This couldn't be good. Why did I end up at the palace if I wasn't going to compete? There's no other explanation for why I woke up on a carriage. Digging through my memory, I try and remember where I was before I woke up.
Fresh cookies enlightened my senses. The last time I was at home felt so far away yet so close. Even though I wasn't at home anymore, Grams's cookies smelled delightful. I tried to reach further into the memory. There was a loud knock on the door. Was it real or in my memory? I snapped out of my dreaming trance, and looked to see what the noise was.
A guard, the one I remember to be Sir. Ly, opened the door. A sudden hush came over the room. I inhaled, too scared to see who the intruder was. The person, a male wearing blinding jewelry, strutted in. As if he was a big deal, the girls around me curtsied. It took me a second to figure out why, then I remembered. Currently, a male in jewelry is walking into the palace basement. There is only one guy in this palace that can walk in wearing expensive stuff like that. This isn't some intruder wearing fancy clothes and jewelry, it's Prince Edmond.
