Sam's POV

Having been awoken a little while ago by the smashing coming from the kitchen, Sam had heard some of the arguing between Dean, and someone - or something - that he didn't know. He got up, pulling a shirt on and opening his door.
The scene in front of Sam was pretty clear. Dean was glaring at someone who was stood by the wall, his eyes cold and unforgiving. The younger Winchester recognised the boy against the wall - it looked like Castiel, who was Dean's best friend in a high school that they had stayed in for a while.
Or at least, that's all that Sam knew.
"Dean? Cas..?" Sam asked uncertainly, earning a nod from Castiel. Dean looked up, eye-level with Sam, and then walked over to his brother.
"It can't be him.. But I think it is. I don't understand this, Sammy, but he won't speak. Will you get him to fuck off? I can't do this." Dean asked in a hushed whisper, making sure that he was pretty close to Sam, and that Castiel wouldn't hear.
"He won't speak?" Sam replied, confused. When Cas had come round to their place when they were in school, he had always been relatively talkative. Dean shook his head, continuing on past Sam and back into his room.
The blue-eyed boy stepped forward from the wall, sighing and looking at the floor.
"Cas..? Are you okay? Did Dean hurt you?" The Winchester asked, walking towards Cas, holding his hands out. The younger boy shook his head, holding his arm and biting his lip.
"He didn't hurt you?"
Cas shook his head again. He pointed to his throat and looked at Sam with pleading eyes.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. You can't talk," Sam inched closer to the boy, "did you tear your vocal chords, or something?" He asked, Castiel responding with a shrug.
"Do you want something to write on? You can kind of have a voice then, I suppose..?"
Cas nodded enthusiastically, grinning. The Winchester boy grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, and passed it to Cas. The paper had some doodles of some creature on the back, but he didn't care. Cas picked up the pen and put the paper against the wall. He started to write, and even though his writing was a bit scruffy because of his shaking hands, he managed to write out an eligible note to Sam.
'Thank you, Sam. My name /is/ Castiel, and I do remember you, and Dean. I was his..' he paused here for a moment, pondering what to write - '.. Best friend in high school. I came over to your place a couple of times, I remember seeing you. I'm sorry about all.. 'This', I guess I expected too much of Dean. I mean, why would he remember me, right?'
Cas looked sad when he had finished writing. He took the note away from the wall and handed it to Sam, trying to put on a smile. The Winchester boy took the note, and after a minute, handed it back to Cas.
"Of course he remembers you, Castiel. Don't be stupid." Cas flinched slightly at the word 'stupid', and Sam noticed.
"Hey, sorry," the Winchester continued, "I didn't mean that you are stupid, just - the idea that Dean would have forgotten about you - that is stupid. I know he remembers you, Cas. Hell, he murmurs your name in his sleep sometimes." He said, chuckling slightly to himself as he finished. Cas blushed a little, furrowing his brow and pressing the paper back against the wall.
'Why does he hate me? I didn't do anything wrong, did I..?'
He wrote, Sam watching over his shoulder.
"No, Cas, I'm pretty sure you didn't. You'll have to ask Dean about this, because he'll be able to give you more solid answers than I can. He doesn't hate you, I'm sure of it. He'll come around."
