I had a father and I had a mother. I believe I had a happy childhood. However, ever since a certain day, everything had changed.
The days after that were all hollow, and everything was so boring. However I finally found something that I needed to do. It was in Japan.I just finished my meal and I was preparing to leave for work at the agency. It had been almost a year after my grandmother was arrested for her crimes. Almost a year since the truth was revealed.
But, I wasn't finished, at least not yet. There is still something I have to do. I was by the front door when Suzue ran to me, huffing and panting.
She looked pale, like she'd seen a ghost. "Daisuke-sama! Please wait!" I was quite curious as to why she seemed so shocked.
"What is it?"
"A child. We found a child earlier. I think you need to-"
"I don't need to do anything, find the child's parents, send him home." I interrupted her. With a sigh I looked at my watch and saw that I was running early. "But Daisuke-sama, the chi-"
"Did I stutter Suzue?" I cut her off calmly but something about the way she kept insisting piqued my interest. She averted her eyes and her fists were clenched.
"It's about Keyi-rah-sama."
That statement stopped me in my tracks. Her name echoed in my mind and made my ears ring. My heart palpitated. After all these years, I finally hear her name again.
"Inform the agency of my absence today." I instructed HEUSC. I'm sure they won't mind and she is more important than anything.
I took brisk steps towards the living room where according to Suzue the child had been.
There I found a toddler, no more than three years old. I knew it the moment I saw the child that he was her son. The same tanned complexion and beautiful bright hazel eyes.
The child possessed the same charm she did, even from a distance. His smile deepened two lopsided dimples on each side of his cheeks that made him very adorable, even for me.
He was surrounded by two maids who played with him, and various toys. Suddenly he started crying. The child bawled, tears streaming down his chubby cheeks as his cries echoed across the mansion.
Even I felt a tinge of panic for a while before I walked over and knelt down. When he laid his eyes in me it was as if he recognised me.
I opened my hand out for a tissue and one of the maids handed me one. Slowly and gently I wiped the child's tears and had him blow his nose.
"Can children this young speak?" I asked quite unsure after all I've never been good with children in the first place.
"Uhm, according to research toddlers his age are still beginning to learn to speak Daisuke-sama." Answered Suzue. 'According to research huh? It seems were going to need more help than I originally thought.'
"So, do you know who this child is?" I asked again, suddenly the child giggled. To my surprise he clasped my face with both hands. The child's laughter sounded very satisfying as he continued to laugh in his own childish way.
His small hands felt incredibly soft. He wore a denim jumper above red cotton long sleeves. Then I noticed paper poking out of his pocket. While letting him laugh my face off for some reason I took the paper.
Only to find that it was a picture folded many times over. When I unraveled it, my eyes widened and my heart skipped a beat seeing the image.
It was a picture of Keyi-rah and I on our first date. One of my arms were wrapped around her shoulders. Her black hair was beautifully done and curled, complimenting her face perfectly.
I remembered her running away from her mother that day, running away from make up. The only cosmetics she ever wore were chapstick. But that day, her lips were coated with bright red lipstick making her plump lips look more luscious.
Her hazel eyes twinkled and her smile was so captivating, that even as I stared at it now it made my heart throb. My jacket enveloped her petite frame and the peach fabric of her dress contrasted against it in perfect harmony with her skin.
We smiled cheerfully at the camera. Memories of our first date were one that I'd never forget. I remember that the picture had been taken inside a booth. Our first date was at the school festival of our last year in highschool.
"You're so beautiful Keyi-rah." I couldn't help but whisper. When he heard her name, the child stopped and his eyes met mine. His eyes really resembled her.
"Keyi-rah.." I said again as it seemed to have an effect in the child. He smiled, dimples deepening. "Mama!" He cheerfully cried as he clapped his hands.
The oxygen in my lungs stopped. I knew, I felt that he was hers but actually hearing it broke something in me. I took a deep breath, I turned the picture towards him and pointed at Keyi-rah's figure.
"Mama! Mama!" He happily clapped. I felt my hands fall weakly to my side. My knees felt like jelly and I collapsed to the floor.
My hands supported my back so I didn't fall but even my arms shook. It was hard to accept.
"Ano, Daisuke-sama please sit down." Said Suzue as she helped me to a chair. I saw the papers she held in one hand. As I sat down I waited for her report.
Instead of saying anything she handed me the files she held. With trembling hands she gave them to me. Not wasting another second, I opened it only to find adoption papers.
To my utter shock, it had been signed by my grandmother. Written there was his name, age and every other information.
"Ranpo Conan Fendez. That's your name." I told the child but he only stared at me with wide curious eyes.
Age, three. Mother, Keyi-rah Fendez. I wondered that even if her name was written there the father information was blank. What also puzzled me was that the papers stated that Conan was previously from an orphanage.
"It seems your mother's surname was passed on to you." I continued talking to him but this time he was not interested in me anymore and was playing with the toys around him.
"Well, after a bit of digging up Daisuke-sama, after our last lead four years ago that Keyi-rah-sama was last seen here, we assumed that she left the country after we didn't find her. But according to records she popped out of nowhere in Yokohama and worked on an orphanage. I don't know how we were never able to pick that up." Suzue explained.
I scanned the other papers but they were all only related to adopting Conan. I stopped and reread the papers. I was shocked to see that indeed it was my grandmother's signature but she signed the papers to adopt Conan as my son.
These papers were signed two years ago. 'How come she never told me? Furthermore, these papers state that only when something happens to the orphanage will Conan be brought here.
So if everything was fine with the orphanage then I never would have known?'
"Daisuke-sama, forgive me for my boldness but I ran a DNA test earlier." Started Suzue, seeming more nervous than before.
"And?"
"And it confirms that this child is your son. Your son with Keyi-rah-sama."
'I knew it.'
I blanked out for a moment. The information took the air out of my lungs and made my heart lurch in emotion. I don't know how to describe my emotions at the time because they were all so powerful. So vivid.
It felt as if I was in the sea and I was drowning.
I was only snapped out of my thoughts when my eyes caught dark blue ink at the back of the photograph.
The folded picture that I had smoothed out lay on my hands. By accident I had turned it around.
But to my astonishment I saw Keyi-rah's quite messy cursive handwriting. The ink bled into the back of the photograph, it looked like it was written some time ago.
I need your help, Daisuke.
