MERCY HADN'T TALKED the entire trip to New Orleans, afraid that if she opened her mouth, she would protest against the entire thing. Her nerves felt like lightning, shocking her body every single time she twitched or moved. Because of this frustrating feeling, she tried to keep herself absolutely still on the plane.
Tokala made that extremely hard.
She didn't even want him to come with her, hoping that he would watch after the pack while she was gone, but he denied leaving her at every turn. Eventually, Mercy had run out of time to try and convince him, so she surrendered her argument and allowed him to join her, Klaus, and Jordyn on their way to New Orleans. As a result, Alpha Turner and Noelle were in charge of the wolves while they were away. Mercy was constantly checking her phone, wondering if they had texted or called her; she promised them that she would answer within a heartbeat, especially if it was an emergency. The two older wolves reassured her that everything would be okay, and they would be patiently awaiting her arrival back to California.
They had barely landed in New Orleans and she already wanted to leave, to run away like she did all those years ago. It was suffocating, having to face this town once again. She clenched her hands tightly together in her lap, her knuckles painted white. Tokala was talking to her from across the walkway—Klaus would never let him sit next to her. She was listening half-heartedly, but it was only when he called her name that she snapped out of it.
"What?" She asked cluelessly, blinking at him. He looked strangely worried, and she had to remind herself that he was probably going crazy having to deal with all her feelings at the moment. She couldn't hate the bond between them more than at that second. She felt more than a little violated, and wished that there was some semblance of privacy.
"I asked if you wanted any water," he repeated, and Mercy shook her head immediately. She moved to glance back out the window to her left, but Tokala spoke again before she could turn fully. "You're afraid, aren't you?"
Her eyes sharpened themselves into an icy glare. "I'm not afraid of anything," she replied stiffly, shifting in her seat for a moment. She tried to relax her hands, but she couldn't; she was too tense, and she knew that Tokala didn't believe her for a second.
However, he didn't say anything more, glancing once over his shoulder at Mercy's father, who was glaring directly at the boy. Jordyn sat next to him, waking up from a short nap she had taken. The plane began its descent in New Orleans, and the second that Mercy felt the plane touch the ground, she breathed out a shaky sigh.
Why did returning to her home feel like walking to her own execution?
She tried to shake off the jitters, to remind herself that this was for the benefit of her mother, and it helped briefly. Remembering that Hayley was in danger was a good incentive to return, but the thought of seeing Hope only made Mercy more nervous. She suddenly wished that she had let Mavis come with her when the girl begged, but with Tokala and Jordyn already traveling with them, she wanted to keep as many people as she could out of trouble. Of course, that protectiveness didn't spread to her own safety, and she suddenly wished that she had thought of a way to stay behind. She could really use a pep talk from her best friend at the moment.
