The next Monday was the best day EVER! I got to see the new classroom and everything! There was red topped tables with fun blue bar stools. The tables had five chairs at each. Four for the special needs kids and the others for the volunteers. I noticed that none of the kids I knew volunteered. But I did notice a cute boy who was asking Mrs. Don about how kids there was going to be. I couldn't hear the rest of the conversation, but once they were done I decided to introduce my self to him.
He sat down at a table to the right of the door. For a few minutes I stood there and studied him. He had somewhat of a buzz cut. His hair was spiked up in the front (which made him even cuter) and he had bright blue eyes that I loved. I watched his nimble fingers flip a page of "To Kill a Mockingbird". I walked up to him confidently, taking deep breaths to my self. I stopped in front of his table and carefully set my hands on the smooth red top, "Hi." I smiled at him. His face raised from the book, he looked presently surprised, "I'm Yale Blu." I held out my hand to him.
He smiled and shook my hand gently. A line of jitters ran down my back as his soft hand released mine, "I'm Grant Ray." his blue eyes looked me up and down. Today, I was wearing a plain light blue shirt with a black star necklace that reached my stomach, "So, are you volunteering for the kids?" he took of his pair of black rimmed glasses, which made him even cuter! At first I didn't answer, I was studying his dimples. He waved his hand in front of my face, "Oh yeah, I'm h-helping." my voice was jittery and squeaky.
He laughed, "Well, what why don't you take a seat right there so that we can get to know each other."
I sat down on the yellow chair spinning around on it a few times, I finally stopped and I looked at him, "What grade are you in?" I was resting my head on my hands.
I could tell he had laughter in his dancing blue eyes, "I'm in 10th, and you?"
My heart immedtly sank. 10th grade?! I'm just a stupid freshman. Why would he want to convese with a little freshman?!, "Oh, uh, I think I need to find my table...." I stood up, "Nice meeting you, Grant." I scurried over to my assigned table, which thank the Lord, was on the other side of the room from him.
I was paired with a senior, Elliott Turner. He was tall and skinny with messy brown hair along with hazel eyes that matched. I would be lying if I said he wasn't cute, cause he was. He was also incredibly smart and loved to write books. He also was a good friend of my brother's (funny thing is I never met him!) He was really open, which made me like him more. Elliott even offered to tutor me in math, which I was failing terribly.
"We can meet at Carri's Coffee Shop, every....Thursday?" Elliott was sitting beside me leaning on the table facing me.
I nodded softly, "Sure, but I need to be home by 6:00, my dad is... protective." that made Elliott laugh louder than I expected. I cought Grant's eye as he glanced over at us. I may have just met the kid, but it seems like him and I have been friends forever.
I froze when Grant started to make his way over to our table. Before he was able to reach us, the special needs kids came filing in wearing name tags. I saw a girl in a wheel chair making her way over to our table. Her name tag was on her chest which said "Claire". I walked up to her, "Hi there, Claire. Why don't you come join me and my friend Elliott's group?" I pointed towards me table where Elliott was sitting with a boy named Mark who had autism.
She nodded softly, but not moving her chapped lips. I came around her wheel chair and pushed her over to the table. I knew that this is where I loved to be, where I belonged.
