Chapter 27 - Louis

Two months. Two fucking months and Katie still hasn’t woken up yet. We should have just tried to fight the demon ourselves. We could have beat him, couldn’t we? Sure it could cost us our lives if we did that, but anything is better than going on without our angel protecting us. I stare at the ceiling, making random patterns of the dots that are holes driven into the ceiling from the boys shooting darts are it.

Lately the boys and I have had a separate guardian angel protecting us. This month, I’m being protected by Stefan. I’m surprised they still let Stefan protect us after the first week they left us in his care. He was always trying to get us killed by doing crazy stunts. Not like we didn’t enjoy it, but everything was hard to do knowing Katie wasn’t there with us.

I feel a strange presents fill the room. It’s not a comforting one that Stefan or in fact, any guardian angel would have, but it’s a dark one. My senses get alerted and I sit up staring into the red pair of eyes of Kristan. I glare towards him and hold onto my bracelet.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come to my side Boo Bear? I mean, I have everything. I have all the power of making your girlfriend stop getting hate, stop all the Larry rumors, and help Katie come back,” he sneers. I scoff at him.

“No, I will never, let me repeat that, NEVER join you. You do nothing but hurt people. Leave me alone because your attempts of making me go to you are worthless!” I scream loud enough for it to get through his thick skull. His eyes turn blank. He disappears from view.

The was the oddest thing that has ever happened with Kristan. Usually he would scream telling me he will get me, but this time, he just disappeared. My phone rings from texts of the boys asking where I am. I decide to get off my butt and go to the meeting we’re supposed to be having with Simon. I’m guessing it is for the new album tour, but I wouldn’t know since I never pay attention. I walk out to my car and start my drive to Simon’s home.

“Louis! Stop driving! You can’t go in there,” Stefan shouts trying to get me to stop the car. I roll my eyes at his foolishness.

“I have to go to a meeting with him. There’s nothing wrong about that.” I reply pulling up to the driveway of his home. I walk out of the car and notice the boys are already there.

The other angels are trying to convince them as well not to walk in. I push through the boys and have them follow me to the house. We barge in as usual. We shout for Uncle Simon to come to the living room. We don’t see him anywhere. The other boys don’t either. We all walk to the living hoping to find him.

Once we get in there, the sight isn’t pretty. Simon sits on the couch with red eyes staring at a picture. His hair is messed up in all different directions, which means he’s either drunk or he’s not the real Simon. With his red, glazed eyes he looks up at us. Tear tracks mark his cheeks. He drops the picture he was holding and brings his knees to his chest.

We’re all stun by the way he’s being so distant and crying is not his usual thing. Usually, he would be the one causing the crying. I bite my lip wondering what is wrong. He starts mumbling incoherent words before staring us in the eyes. His head tilts slightly to the left before asking a question.

“Have you guys ever lost a child? I bet you haven’t. You are all merely simple teenagers without a care in the world. She was so young. Only 13 years into her life,” he pauses before laughing a bit, “I should have been careful. I should have been watching the streets, but no! I decided to take a risk. My foolish mistake took my daughter away from me; my foolish mistake took away the only thing I had left of my flesh and blood!” He breaks down crying before passing out from his drunken rambling.

Liam, Harry and Zayn all take charge and lift him up from his couch. They take him upstairs not saying a single word. Niall sits down on the empty couch clutching the photo Simon dropped. He glances at it before gasping. I run over to see what he gasped at. Once my eyes hit the photograph, I too gasped loudly.

Standing side by side, Simon and his daughter stand smiling at the camera. The girl in the picture isn’t just Simon’s daughter, but our guardian angel. She stands happily with her eyes glossed next to Simon. I turn the photo on it’s back and see the date.

“December, 4th, 1993. Katie’s birthday,” I murmur under my breath. She was still alive when Niall was born. Niall nudges me, sticking a piece of paper in my direction. I grasp the paper and read it outloud, “Yesterday, December 4th, at 04:04 pm, a semi collided with another car. We have been told that the driver, Taylor Stalls, 25,  of the semi was attempting suicide but failed in his attempt. Simon Cowell, 34, is in critical condition and is currently in the hospital. His daughter, Katie, 13, was declared dead on impact. She just turned 13 that day as well.”

I drop the piece of paper and grab the newspaper that was on the ground. Pictures of the crash are all over. The driver has no scratches on him whatsoever. Only one picture of Katie is the biggest. It looks like a school photo. Her hair is in a braid and she stares at the camera with warm eyes.

Bells start to ring. I glance at the clock and realize it’s 4:04 pm. Stefan touches my shoulder. A rush of air runs through me. I squint my eyes as a bright light blinds my vision. In only a matter of seconds, I’m in a room that seems to be a hospital. Stefan sighs and drags me to a room. On the bed, Katie lies on a bed, looking peaceful.

“They have granted you guys a chance to see Katie one at a time. They think doing this, Katie will wake up faster. You are the first one because you stood up to Kristan while holding your bracelet. He saw that you wouldn’t go to his side no matter what. You have an hour Louis,” Stefan says briefly before leaving.

I walk closer to Katie, taking all the words Stefan told me. I don’t understand why this happened to Katie. I guess she just tried too hard to protect us. If only we knew how much strain we were putting on her. I’m sure we would have taken it easy on her small body. She is after all, forever 13. I gulp and touch Katie’s forehead. Nothing but warmth fill my fingertips.

“Katie, I’m sorry. I just need you to wake up. The boys and I need you. We want you to be there when we have our kids. We want you to be there when we grow old but we’re still young at heart. We want you to be there as much as possible,” I whisper.

I hear someone walk in. I turn around to meet the same pair of brown eyes Katie has. The woman smiles at me. Her features are just like Katie’s. I furrow my eyebrows and scrunch my nose. She looks at me and nods.

“Hello Louis. So you’re one of the boys my dear Katie is taking care of?” She asks looking at me. I raise my eyebrow at her ‘my dear Katie’ part. She has to be no older than 20 years old, but looked tiresome. I shrug and nod at her questions. She lets out a little chuckle, “Louis, I’m Katie’s mother. I died while giving birth to her. I was given an extra chance up here in the angels society.”

I round my mouth into an O shape. I shiver at the thought of watching her child in another hospital room. Or worse, die. I look at the machine on the right of me. It has a single thing on the monitor. Energy. The level says 60%, which I hope is enough for her to awaken.

“Looks like her energy boosted up by your visit. She was at 50 a few minutes ago. No matter what Lou, she’ll wake up eventually.” I hear her mother’s voice sooth my thoughts. I feel the rush of air go through me. I sit on the couch of Simon with the paper still at my hand.

She’ll wake up eventually.
