“Hi!” I said softly and petted her soft fur when Patches decided enough was enough and just jumped out of my lap on the floor. “Okay then.” I laughed.

“Dream?” I asked, my gaze fixated on the view outside the window.

“Yeah?” He shouted, his voice echoing from the other room.

I looked at the heavy dark cloud forming in the sky. The sky itself got darker and darker with every second.
“Um, it looks like the... storm is coming.”

“Oh,” He said and walked to the window looking outside. “Well it shouldn't be-”

His voice was interrupted by a deafening thunder causing the whole house to shake and the rain started pouring followed by the electricity going out.

“-that bad.” He finished sarcastically and sighed.

I laughed and sat back watching the rain pour and pound heavily on the window as if it's trying to get inside.

A sudden gust of wind blew into the room causing both of us to shiver.

“At least it's not gonna be long.”

Or at least that's what we thought in the next thirty minutes after that. Then an hour. Then two, then three.

“So short.” I chuckled and he finally sat on the couch beside me.

“What are we going to do?”

“I don't know.” I answered, “I mean the power is out and my phone is slowly dying so.”

“Yeah,” He checked his phone and placed it down next to him. “Mine too.”

I watched as he turned around my breath short. “What are you-” I tried to ask but any words I tried to say were stuck in my throat when he placed his head on my lap.

My heart raced and I swallowed. “What are you doing?” I asked, my voice coming out as a whisper.

“You want me to-” He asked, his voice quick and tried to stand up but I stopped him placing my hand on his arm.

“No, no, it's... fine. It's fine.” I smiled and looked down at him, his eyes meeting mine.

“You know,” He started and looked away and I smiled softly. “I remember once...”

His voice softened the hard sound of thunder and rain. I listened carefully, sometimes adding a few words in response. He talked slowly and as if his words soothed me, I relaxed and my anxiety slowly quieted.

“And what do you think about that one?”
He asked.

“Well, I mean, It'll take a lot of work and time but-”

“No, it's okay, we'll do it together.”
He said and looked up at me and I smiled.

Yeah, we'll do it together. Three of us.
Until then, two of us, both of us, will stay in this moment and his head will be laid on my lap and thunder will shake the world outside while my fingers are climbing mischievously to his hair, playing with locks of his hair like he did to me.

Like he did to me. And his hair, soft and silky, will stick everywhere and I'll giggle and he'll say “You're such an idiot” In that tone and he'd continue the story, like he's doing right now, and I'd listen to it carefully.

By the time I was mindlessly playing with his hair he turned his head towards me, a small smile on his face.

“What?” I ask.

“Nothing. You're cute.” He said, so easily, so nonchalantly and my heart beat faster and faster, my cheeks burning with oh so familiar fire.

So easily. The words rolled off his tongue like they're nothing; another breath.

“When I was young I used to collect small shells.” He said slowly and I remembered the one I gave to him.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah! There was this one, it had like- it had spikes like, it was funny... and stuff.”

I chuckled and smiled fondly at him.

I watched how, minute by minute, his enthusiasm grew, like a little kid on a Christmas eve. How his eyes would shine and that stupid smile of his would grow bigger and bigger, causing me to smile like an idiot, too.

“I want- I wanna show you something tomorrow.”

“O-okay.” I listened to his stuttering and stuttered myself. “Show me what?” I remembered to ask.

“Well, I'm not going to tell you, it's a surprise.”

Oh. A surprise?

“Surprise...” I repeated, untying little knots of his hair.

“Yeah.”

Tomorrow came faster than I thought.
Faster than I wanted it. And in the moment he stood up, the place he lay on left so cold and empty, I had no other choice than to go and lie in the bed, in his guest room, and try to sleep.

To try and forget his silky hair between my fingers. To forget the sweet words, the smile on his face. To forget.

But how?

How could I forget those eyes. Those eyes. The ones who spoke when he was silent. The ones who shone when he smiled and the ones- who cried because of me. Oh, I hated myself, for loving him the way I shouldn't. The way I shouldn't.

Moonlight came in through the curtains, giving the sheets an unusal, bluish shade.

I couldn't fall asleep that night. Something kept me awake, and I sure as hell knew what. I just couldn't — or didn't want to — aknowledge it.

I must've passed out later at night because, as the sun rose, I was woke up by small paws on my arm and Patches settling next to me.

She turned on her back and shifted some more before finally settling and eventually falling asleep.

I smiled at her and glanced at the clock on the wall. 07:34am, great. I covered my eyes with my hand to try and get some more sleep but with no success.

The sun shone violently and the sheets, bluish shade last night, were now golden,
bathing in sunlight. The sunlight spilled on the ground too, leaving long golden stains across the floor.

Realising the power probably must be back, I stood up and plugged in my phone, relieved when it started charging.

I glance at the window as joyful realisation finally hits me – it's sunny.

It's not raining.
Not raining, I repeat to myself.

The surprise. A smile rises on my face, like the sun on the horizon. What is it?

What is it?
