This is based on a winter themed novella I wrote like 3 or 4 years ago for school
Julie and the Phantoms - Ruke
He regrets it. Oh, how he regrets it. He can't even remember why he did it, but he knows that he has to get him back one way or another.
Luke, 19, broke up with his boyfriend, Reggie, 18, a few days ago and now he regrets it from the bottom of his very torn heart. And the worst part is that more than hurting Reggie and having to watch him break down right in front of him, without even being able to comfort him, he himself feels almost as bad as he Reggie must feel right now. He loves Reggie. He never actually told him that, but he does.
He realized that now though. Now that Reggie is gone, and it felt as if his whole life had lost its purpose. Like there was no point in living on.
He has to get Reggie back, but the question is just: how?
Luke, who thought everything would be great if he broke up with Reggie. That all judging looks would disappear and he'd feel so much better. That Reggie would feel so much better, because he wouldn't have to try ignore all the homophobic slurs spat at them.
There is one moment that he can't seem to forget. Like it's been welded into his memory. It was a dark October evening last year. They were laid on the couch at Luke because they'd been out shopping earlier. Luke realized something was off, because Reggie was very quiet. Nudging the younger a bit, Luke made Reggie look at him.
"What's wrong?" he asks the younger.
"It's nothing"
Luke knew Reggie well enough to see that that wasn't true.
Reggie realised this and spoke up again.
"It's just... something someone said earlier... " he whispered the last part even quieter.
Trying to rummage through his memory of the day, Luke remembered something.
flashback
They were walking down the street, shopping bags in one hand, the others hand in the other. They were just minding their own business when someone bumped into them. Looking back, they were met with a finger and a slur.
flashback ends
This might not sound that bad, but Luke knew Reggie. He knew Reggie had issues with horribly low self esteem. And he knew his background. When Reggie first came out, he was left alone. He had to move in order to get away from the hate and unsupportive people in his life. So Luke knew how much something like this tore at him.
But oh, how wrong he'd been. Now both of them just felt even worse and as Luke felt his feelings for Reggie grow deeper and stronger by the minute. And of course it had to be the day before New years as well.
Luke felt tears begin to roll down his already tear-stained cheeks. He felt like his heart had been ripped out of his chest and stomped on. His throat was becoming dry as the Saharah desert.
He had to do something. He couldn't just sit here drowning in his own sorrow. And he couldn't bear the thought of Reggie, distraught and alone on New years. He had to see him. Had to hold him. He couldn't stand not seeing him. He could feel how his legs moved him toward and out his door. How they automatically steered toward Reggie's familiar door. He knocked on the door, waiting.
While he was waiting he felt the anxiety start to build up. What if Reggie won't open the door? What if he's actually lost him? And if Reggie does open the door, what's he supposed to say? What are you supposed to say to someone who you just broke but who also so happens to be the love of your life? The thinking time is minimized though as Reggie opens the door.
Looking up, he meets Reggie's face. But not the Reggie he's used to. It's not the usually happy, positive, bright Reggie, but a Reggie who looked like he'd just lost everything, but times a hundred.
Both of them were just standing there, staring at each other, until Reggie breaks and throws himself at Luke, crying his eyes out, staining Luke's shirt. Luke is so stunned that he can only stand there, holding Reggie close like if he let's go for even a second he'll disappear from him.
When Reggie's cries had turned into quiet sniffles they pulled apart and Reggie pulled Luke into his room.
Sitting on the couch, Reggie almost starts crying again. Luke still hasn't told him why he's there, so Reggie is still terrified of what's to come. What if Luke isn't there to get him back?
When Luke sees the look on Reggie's face he finally braces himself to speak. He starts by telling Reggie why he's there which lifts a huge weight off of Reggie's chest. "Alright, so he is here to get me back. Now he just needs to tell me why in the world he broke up with me in the first place" is all Reggie can think.
Either he said that out loud or Luke could just read his thoughts, because when Luke started talking again, it was as if he was answering Reggie's question.
"You're probably wondering why I broke up with you in the first place if I was gonna come back a few hours later, huh?" Reggie doesn't get the chance to answer before he's continuing.
"And I ask myself the same thing. I don't really have a good reason, except that I was afraid. I was afraid that someone would hurt you for being with me, just because they thought it wrong. That others might bully or make you feel bad just because you're not what they consider "right".
He pauses a second before continuing.
"But now I know differently. I know that it doesn't matter if someone doesn't like our relationship. That it doesn't matter if someone wishes you hurt, because I will always be there to protect you. Always"
Another pause.
"So, if it's not too much to ask or too late, would you be my boyfriend again?"
Reggie could just stare at him, eyes glossy and mouth hanging open. Luke thought he might say no at first.
But then Reggie threw himself forward and pressed his lips again Lukes.
"I'll take that as a yes"
Reggie just nods.
Now it was Luke's turn to cry and throw himself at Reggie. Through the tears, he managed to mutter something that Reggie thought resembled an "I love you". Not wanting to take the risk, he just said.
"What did you say?"
Luke freezes and let's go of Reggie who shivers at the loss of warmth when with the loss of Luke's body on his. Taking a deep breath, Luke readies himself.
"I love you, Reg" he whispers.
Not being capable of holding himself back, Reggie throws himself around Luke's neck.
"I love you too, Luke" he whispers into Luke's ear, sending shivers down his spine.
Laying down on Reggie's bed, cuddling, they both realize just how exhausting it is to cry for a whole day.
A/N HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE! Let's hope for a better year in 2021 than 2020 was <3
